Independence Day H.-G3
THAT RICO
by Tracy Gantz
That Rico’s quickness out of the gate prompted Champion trainer Paul Jones to opt for the shorter Independence Day Handicap against older horses at Los Alamitos. The move garnered That Rico his first stakes victory.
Jockey Jesus Ayala got That Rico out of the inside gate on top. Go Black Benny challenged them throughout the 300 yards, but That Rico kept his nose in front, winning by that margin in :15.337.
Jones owns That Rico with Thompson Racing Inc. The gelding broke his maiden in his racing debut, and earlier this year he finished second in the El Primero Del Ano Derby-G3, then third in the Dillingham Handicap.
Double Bar S Ranch LLC bred That Rico in California from homebred winner Jess Like That. That Rico is the mare’s first winner from two start- ers. Her second starter is 2 year old Foose Jenner, already placed twice. The second dam is graded stakes-placed Shes A Strawfly, whose foals include graded winner He Could Be The One.
Lisa Anderson’s homebred Go Black Benny (Inseperable-Stuckonafeeling) ran second for jockey Rodrigo Aceves and trainer Jaime Gomez. The gelding finished third in last year’s Golden State Derby-G2.
El Remalcable (Two Corona Special-Remarkable Power) got third with Jose Nicasio in the irons. Felix Gonzalez trains the gelding for owner Jesus Daniel Padilla. El Remalcable won four consecutive races from late 2016 through earlier this year.
Completing the field were Uno Corona
Mas (One Sweet Jess-Corona Mas Fina), Remarkableyesapoweer (Eyesa Special-Remarkable Power), Lotta Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Gotta Lotta Fame), Boylike (Walk Thru Fire-Feminista), De Moss (Separatist-Classic Sassy Chic), Nymph (Foose- Elans Last) and Heat Warning (A Regal Choice-Its a Dry Heat TB).

Sibling rivalry didn’t play a role in the July 1 Belles Stakes at Fair Meadows because brother and sister Terry and Debbie Freeman instead collabo- rated. Terry owns winner Yourtheoneinmyheart, while Debbie bred the filly in Oklahoma and rode her to victory.
Hard To Get, coming off a three-race winning streak, went off as the 4-5 favorite in the 350-yard Belles, with Yourtheoneinmyheart the second choice. Yourtheoneinmyheart dueled with Eye Eye Captain right from the start, but Debbie was able to get her mount home first by a head in :17.200.
Gary Walker trains Yourtheoneinmyheart
at Fair Meadows. The Belles marked the filly’s
first stakes victory after two earlier attempts. Yourtheoneinmyheart’s four previous wins came in a maiden and three allowance races. Debbie has been aboard the filly in each of her 11 starts.
Debbie also rode Sexy N Saucy, the dam of Yourtheoneinmyheart, to both of her lifetime wins. Debbie has bred all four of the mare’s starters, three of them winners, including Oklahoma Hi-Point Aged Mare/stakes winner Nanny McFeebe and stakes-placed Champion Huddle, her top earner.
David Clonts’ homebred Eye Eye Captain (Captain Courage-Eye My Alexis) ran second for jockey Jesus Salazar and trainer Guillermo Valdivia. The 3-year-old filly broke her maiden last year at Will Rogers Downs and had placed in three earlier starts this year.
Mario Delgado piloted Lisa Joneson’s homebred Can Only Imagine (Furrtreeous-Mercy Mea) to third. Carlos Ruis saddled the 3-year-old filly for the first time. Can Only Imagine has won two of nine starts.
Completing the field were Hardtoget (Foose- Tinys Corona Queen), High Speed Kitty (High Rate Of Return-Kitty D Ville) and YM Icy (Valiant Hero-Icy Valentine).

Juno Jess ran third in his June 4 trial heat for
the Roche Equine Futurity at Jerome County Fair. He was close throughout the entire race and, although the trials were hand timed, he finished fast enough to qualify to the finals. The trial run set the two-year-old sorrel gelding up for the finals, which carried a total purse of $16,850.
In the June 18 Roche Equine Futurity, Juno Jess broke third from the six-post. He caught the leaders quickly and had a nose lead by the first call.
Rider Never Marin was on board Juno Jess for the first time, and the jockey made it count. The pair dueled with Super Starr and Dynasty Darlin to the wire, with Juno Jess increasing his lead to a head at the top of the stretch. Dynasty Darlin weakened a bit, but Super Starr was holding close.
There was no catching Juno Jess this time, however, and he finished the contest a neck in front, stopping the timer at :17.658 for the 350 yards to earn a career best 105 speed index.
Juno Jess took home the first place money of $6,740, making his total cumulative earnings $7,255 with a race record of 2(1)-0-1 from four starts. The gelding broke his maiden in his first start in the trials to the Sherm Hadley/Giles Memorial Futurity and was a finalist in the consolation.
The gelding is owned by Julian Pinkham and trained by Ricardo Castillo.
Juno Jess was bred in Texas by Casey J. Humphrey out of lightly raced Junos Eye. The mare has produced 100% money earners from three start- ers that have tallied three wins. Juno Jess is her top earner and first stakes winner.
Super Starr (Hadtobenuts-All Star Elite) ran sec- ond in his Roche Futurity trial heat and also finished second in the finals. The brown gelding’s connec- tions include owner Dan Moon and trainer David Greene. Cordarelton Benn was handling the reins.
Dynasty Darlin (FDD Dynasty-Corona Darlin) ran a steady and even race to capture third place money. The brown filly is owned by BNB Racing Inc. and is trained by Ricardo Castillo. Jesus Valenzuela was in the saddle. Dynasty Darlin was coming off a second place finish in her Roche Futurity trial.
First Prize Star (First Prize Stone-Gone Shortly) finished fourth and was followed by Royal Tricky Lady (Separatist-A Classy Trick), Crown Him Twice (Tell Him Twice-Crowndasher), Miss Czech (Ragazzo-Czech Royal Camilla) and Dublin Dynamite (Mr Corona Cash-Corona Cruise).
