Skip Zimmerman Memorial
THE FISCAL CLIFF
By Michael Compton
Having finished first or second in 16 of 17 lifetime starts heading into the Skip Zimmerman Stakes at Canterbury Park on June 18, The Fiscal Cliff was
bet down to the odds-on favorite by the wagering public. The Fiscal Cliff didn’t disappoint.
Piloted by Benito Baca, The Fiscal Cliff broke sixth from the 9-gate and was in third position at the first call. With a steady bid through the lane, the 4-year-old bay colt wore down pacesetter JR Rock Star nearing the finish, collared that rival close home and then held a late bid from Streakin PR to score by a neck.
Trained by Kasey Willis, The Fiscal Cliff covered the distance in :17.757, earning a 99 speed index. The colt, a homebred for Thomas D. Lepic, improved his slate to win his sixth in stakes com- pany, and increased his bankroll by the $12,000 winner’s share to $358,118. His other stakes victories include this year’s Grade 2 Bob Moore Memorial Stakes at Remington Park.
The Iowa-bred is out of 3-time winner Signs Zoomer, who also finished 4th in the 2008 Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Futurity-RG2. She has pro- duced 100% earners from six starters, including her top earner, 2-time stakes winner Wagon Tales.
Kasey Willis also saddled runner-up Streakin PR (Corona Cartel-Bonnie Streakin). David Pinon rode the 2nd place finisher for owner Thomas Scheckel. JR Rock Star (Fantastic Corona JR-One Famous Rock Star), with Justin Shepherd aboard, finished a close 3rd for trainer Jason Olmstead and owner Don Webb.
Eagles Span (One Famous Eagle-Tiny First Effort), Fast Prize Janie (Carters Cartel-Fast Prize Doll), Divas Candy Girl (Spit Curl Jess-Some
Kinda Diva), Watch My Wallet Loto (Mr Piloto- Concopata), Ada Lida (Tempting Dash-Witchs Streak), Shez Hot Hubba Hubba (Furrtreeous-Annie Montana) and Shaky Hero (Valiant Hero-Shaky Girl) completed the order of finish.
