Valley Junction Futurity
A JORDON REED
by Danny Camp
Prairie Meadows offered a sloppy sealed track for the finals of the $289,830 Valley Junction Futurity on Oct. 14.
The fastest qualifier from the Sept. 30 tri-
als, A Jordon Reed won his heat to the Valley Junction Futurity in a determined effort to score by 1/2-length in front to top the qualify- ing ladder to the main event.
In the Valley Junction Futurity finals, A Jordon Reed dominated the field.
The two-year-old gray gelding broke well from the inside post position and was running at full speed within his first two jumps out of the gates.
A Jordon Reed and regular rider Oscar Delgado, who has ridden the gelding in all of his seven starts, gave quite an impressive effort in this event. The pair had a 1/2-length lead at the first call and maintained that advantage through the top of the stretch.
A Jordon Reed finished 1-length in front of the field at the wire and stopped the clock in :17.322 to earn a career high 103 speed index.
A Jordon Reed now boasts a race record of 4(2)-1-1 from six starts.
His race record includes a victory in this year’s $167,600 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity at Canterbury Park on July 2. He qualified to that event with a second-place fin- ish and won the finals in similar fashion to his win in the Valley Junction Futurity, breaking well and taking the lead quickly from the gates.
A Jordon Reed deposited the winner’s share of the Valley Junction Futurity purse, which was worth $115,932. He pushed his cumulative earnings to $215,728.
A Jordon Reed is owned and bred by Kendrix Brothers and is trained by Edward Ross Hardy.
The gelding was bred in Oklahoma out
of lightly raced Parr For Me, who earned a
92 speed index on the track earning nearly $18,000. The mare has produced 100% earn- ers from five starters. A Jordon Reed is her top runner and first stakes winner.
“There is a difference in horses, the good ones, they act different,” stated trainer Ed Hardy. “They have an air of class about them, and A Jordon Reed is like that. He’s a great horse with a big future. He kind of runs generic in the trials, but when he comes back in the finals, he craves it.
“He is a professional and conducts himself like one and is good to be around at the barn
and gallops like a champ,” Hardy continued. “He is a good gate horse and we have never had a soundness issue.”
When asked about the
future of the gray gelding,
Hardy replied, “This horse
is not paid up in anything,
so we are not sure what the
future holds. We are going
turn him out and probably
wait and see what Remington
has to offer. Most of all, I
would like to stress it’s a team effort. Starting with the Kendrix Brothers, who raised the horse, all the way across to jockey Oscar Delgado and including the guys who brush this horse.”
Third fastest qualifier Makit Snappi (One Dashing Eagle-Duck Mea Running) chased gamely and finished second. The filly’s con- nections include owner Charles Mitchek and conditioner John Hammes. Ramiro Garcia had the riding assignment. Makit Snappi, who won her trial heat to the Valley Junction finals,
finished in fifth place in the Remington Park Juvenile Stakes in April.
PV Queen Bee Candy (Cartels Candy Man-Ima Lazie Too) ran a steady and even race to pocket the third place money. Her team includes owner Gordon Pevehouse and trainer Clinton Crawford. Omar Reyes was
in the saddle. The filly, who
finished second in her trial for the final qualifying position, previously won the FL Lady Bug Stakes at Remington Park in May.
Eagle Deluxe (One Famous Eagle-Corona Deluxe) finished in fourth place and was fol- lowed by The Most High Rules (FDD Going Grand-Tres Seis Mischief), Bootn Scootn Corona, (Freighttrain B-Corona Glass), BV Comeback Kid (Corona Cartel-Eyesa First), Perfect Lota (Lota PYC-Perfection In Brown), Apollitical Valor (Apollitical Jess-BP Painted Lady) and Estrella De Noche (Favorite Cartel-JA Desert Evening).
