After a couple of near-misses in stakes competitions earlier this year, Major Bites scored his first win in stakes com- pany, leading at every call of the $170,000 Namehimastreaker New Mexico Classic Championship-RG1 at Zia Park on Oct. 29.
Prepped by trainer Jesus Carrete, Major Bites broke on top coming from the 3-gate, and led by a head both at the first call and as he entered the stretch. Major
Bites finally got some breath-
ing room late, opening up a
1/2-length lead by the time
he hit the wire.
Ridden by Jose Alvarez, Major Bites finished his 440-yard trip in :21.943, posting an 88 speed index while running into a 10 mph headwind.
The 4-year-old geld- ing led at every call of the 440 yards, bringing home
Hobbs America Derby-G3

Marseille, an 11-1 longshot and the third- fastest qualifier, broke his maiden with a wire-to-wire victory in the Hobbs America
Derby-G3 at Zia Park on Oct. 8. Campaigned by Hugo Esquivel of El
Paso, Texas, and racing against a reported 13-mph head wind, Marseille went 440 yards in :21.977. Eric Quintana prepped and Jose Enrique Ortiz rode the gelding, who banked the $72,256 winner’s share of
the $150,535 purse.
Marseille was coming off of a second-place finish in one of four Hobbs America Derby trials on Sept. 24. The gelding was bred in Colorado by the Rio Rancho, New Mexico-based partnership of Joiner and Kidd.
Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Marseille has won one of his seven outs and
he has earned $76,757. He

a $102,000 payday for owner Israel Bordier that swelled the competitor’s lifetime earn- ings to $228,012. This marked the gelding’s 5th victory in 19 career starts.
Major Bites has been a fixture on the stakes circuit in New Mexico. He finished 2nd in
the Jimmy Drake Stakes at SunRay Park in April then hit the board in 3rd place in the Zia Handicap at Ruidoso in July. Major Bites was a
finalist in his most recent out, the First Moonflash Maturity at Albuquerque Downs.
Carlos Paez bred Major Bites out of 2-time winner Dyna Mo Rime. She has produced 100% earners from 5 starters, including stakes placed Dyna O Mite. Major Bites is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Play Misty Foreme (Jesse James Jr-Arbor Mist) finished second by daylight
began his 3-year-old season with a fourth- place run in a 400-yard maiden $12,500 claiming dash at Sunland Park.
Marseille is the first stakes winner from two starters foaled by KR Dragonfly, who earned $158,607 from 2009-14. She scored a 1/2-length victory in the 2011 Lubbock Stakes-G2 at Zia Park and placed, or was a finalist, in eight other graded stakes events.
The mare set a New Track Record at Zia Park for 220 yards in :11.715.
Marseille traces back
to his fourth dam, winner O’Lonesome Me, who ran second in the 1974 New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby at Albuquerque.
