Jim Bader Futurity
LIL BLACK WAGON
by Danny Camp
Lil Black Wagon captured the $174,400 Jim Bader Futurity at Prairie Meadows on Oct. 14. Over a sloppy and sealed track, Lil Black
Wagon broke third from the 2-post and led by the first call. Regular rider Jorge Torres and the gelding maintained a 1/2-length lead through- out and crossed the wire with that same mar- gin. They stopped the clock at :17.615 for the 350 yards to earn a career best 94 speed index. Lil Black Wagon now has a
total bankroll worth $95,489 after adding this $78,480 winner’s share, and boasts a record of 3(1)-0-0 from five outs. The 7th fastest qualifier and winner from the Sept. 29 trials, the gelding also finished fourth in this year’s Iowa Stallion Futurity.
His connections include owners Michael A. Pohl & Bob Urich and trainer Stacy Charette-Hill.
PCQHRA Breeders’ Derby-G3
Bred in Iowa by Bob Urich out of lightly raced Ru Special, the mare has produced 100% earners from three starters. Lil Black Wagon is the first stakes winner and top earner of the brood.
“This little guy got knocked around real bad in the trials,” stated trainer Stacy Charette-Hill. “He was hammered on both sides and was still able to qualify. We knew if he got a good go at
the beginning, he would be
a winner. He is a good gate horse, but has had some bad luck getting away from there.
“He was the fastest qualifier in the Iowa Stallion Futurity, but in the finals he fell on his nose at the start and still man- aged a fourth place finish,” the trainer added. “He is a calm good minded horse that is good to gallop and be around. Jorge Torres, our jockey, is like family now. He also rode the fastest
qualifier and opted to ride Lil Black Wagon. Now we will turn him out and wait for next year. ”
Iris Royal Jess (Captain Courage-Pure Royal Dash) was able to grind out a second place finish under Cristian Esqueda. His team includes owner B/B Wessels LLC and trainer Alex Wessels. Who Rah (Furyofthewind- Rodeo Rona) finished third under Ricky Ramirez. The gelding is owned by Jim R. Harvey and trained by Stacy Charette-Hill.
Tohottwotouch (High Rate Of Return- Countessa Run), Kays Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Real Royal Down), Flash First Moon (First Moonflash-Real Royal Down), CR Lota Girl (Lota PYC-LW Evening Lajolla), Sweet Twisted Tea (Sweet First Down-Dashing On The Moon), Apolitical Mess (Apollitical Jess- Adashasunshine), Jess Summertime (One Sweet Jess-Regally Rare) completed the field.
KIDDY UP COWGIRL
by Tracy Gantz
Both of Robin MacPherson’s parents, Rod and Anna, died in 2016, a major loss to Quarter Horse racing. Robin wanted to make sure their race-
horses got good homes, and she found a particularly great one for Kiddy Up Cowgirl. The filly went to David & Leah Nelson, remained in Jimmy Glenn’s barn, and rewarded everyone by winning the PCQHRA Breeders’ Derby-G3 on Oct. 6. “Robin went out of her way to help us make this deal hap- pen,” said Glenn. “We can’t
thank her enough. She wanted to make sure these horses would have a great home.”
The Nelsons knew of Kiddy Up Cowgirl’s record by watching her on TVG & listening to Glenn brag about her. “When Robin decided to get out of the business, Jimmy had 3 horses with her, includ- ing Kiddy Up Cowgirl,” said David. “He called me and said, ‘Hey, I got a real deal for
you.’ We said we would take it. It was a great opportunity.”
Third in her trial, Kiddy Up Cowgirl went into the final at 16-1 under jockey Eulices Gomez. On the rail, she rallied to win by 3/4-length. “A few steps after the gap she was rolling, and I started thinking she was going to beat them,” said Glenn. “Sure enough, she kept going. With her stride & late punch, I knew she had a chance. The more
ground, the more she loves it.” “She was there early on, and
I knew we could come and get them,” said Gomez. “She was within a neck, maybe a short half at the most, and just kept on run- ning and got them at the wire.”
Kiddy Up Cowgirl upped her earnings by $73,080 to $166,591 and her record is now 16-4(1)- 3-4(1). The Nelsons bought her privately a month before the race. “She’s paid for herself and paid for the baby I bought at the Los
Alamitos Equine Sale here last year,” said David. “It was all good. I don’t know if I’ll sleep tonight.”
David Martin bred Kiddy Up Cowgirl from unraced Girls Choice, dam of 3 starters/winners.
Renewed (Walk Thru Fire-Make Over)

Ronald Hartley’s homebred One Proud Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Guy Chasing) was 3rd under Ramon Sanchez for trainer John Cooper.
