Indiana Championship
APOLLITICAL MAN
by Michael Cusortelli
Making his first-ever start at Indiana Grand, Apollitical Man sprinted to a convincing wire- to-wire 1 3/4-length victory in the $85,480 Indiana
Championship on Oct. 21.
Apollitical Man covered 400 yards in :19.641
and earned a lifetime-best 101 speed index while racing against a reported 13-mph head wind. James Flores rode the 5-year-old gelding for owners Jon & Brant Barley and trainer Larry Sharp.
Apollitical Man was coming off of a 1-length score in the 400-yard OQHRA Fall Classic at Will Rogers Downs on Sept. 29.
The gelding has won eight of 18 starts, including four stakes, and he has banked $143,406.
“He really repeated what he did in his last out,” said Flores, who also rode Apollitical Man in the OQHRA Fall Classic. “When he runs his race, he’s hard to beat.”
Apollitical Man was bred by Jim and Marilyn Helzer and is one of 10 winners from 13 starters pro- duced by winner Tinys Corona Queen. Apollitical Man is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Apollitical Man’s second dam, Tiny First Effort, won the 2001 Southern California Derby-G1 at Los Alamitos.
Country Boy 123 (Country Chicks Man-Very Dashin 123) ran second for owner Ruth F. Barbour and trainer Anthony Cunningham. Giovani Vazquez-Gomez was up. Carolyn Bruce’s Stinkin Rich (One Famous Eagle-Miss Scarlet) finished third under Rolando Pina for trainer Matt Frazier.
Woop Dee Doo (Good Reason SA-Jess Racy Eyes), Sicario (Jumpn Chic-Chiseledeasterbunny), A Tacky Chick (Tac It Like A Man-A Chick Of Class), TF Jess A Leader (Mr Jess Perry-TF Ms Special Perry), Seize The Win (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jess An Illusion) & Time To Get Rough (Gainango-Tuff Ladys) completed the field. Speed Sale Futurity
BONO RHYTHM
by Dillon Hamilton
Bono Rhythm became the first stakes winner
of the young field in the $44,080 Speed Sale Futurity at Indiana Grand Race Course on Oct. 21. The sorrel filly bolted from the 6-post in second
under Rodney Prescott. The pair wasted no time mounting a 1/2-length lead by first call. They maintained that coveted lead at the stretch, drifting somewhat down the track. Rival Speranza Di Capi, drove late to make things interesting for the evening crowd, but Bono Rhythm had no mind to share in her triumph and held onto the lead by a head at the wire. The pair sprinted the 330-yard fast track in :17.201 and earned an 89 speed index while breaking her maiden in stakes company.
The filly bagged the winner’s share of the purse for owner C. W. Mullenix and trainer Randy Haffner. The $24,293 brings her overall earnings to $25,893.
Mullenix bred Bono Rhythm out of 9-time win- ner Dashs Rhythm. The 4-time stakes winner has produced 100% earners from six starters, including top earner HF Mighty Chick. Bono Rhythm is her first stakes winner.
Speranza Di Capi (Capo Di Capi-Hope for Me Too) just missed under Oscar Macias. The sorrel gelding finished 2nd for owner Lisa Cunningham
and trainer Anthony Cunningham. Jessalilsecret (Hez Our Secret-Jess Cranky) stepped out, but was closing under Berkley Packer. The brown gelding finished 3rd for owner Keith Bode and trainer Randy M. Smith.
Countrytyme Diner (Jess Zoomin-Panther Speed), Atempting Love (Temtpting Dash- Lovemelikethat), WH Shez Jazzy (Bono Jazz- Designer Suite), The Ebony Hare (Bug Among Thorns-Babys Rabbit), Running Brook Pal (Brookstone Bay-Wide Open Runaway) & Sixes On Jamie (Ivory James-Triple Six Center) completed the order of finish.
Canada Cup Futurity-RG3
TRUE COPY
by Tracy Gantz
The combination of trainer William Leech, jockey Ricardo Moreno, and owner Charles Stojan made
it back-to-back wins on Oct. 21 when they scored
with True Copy in the Canada Cup Futurity-RG3 at Century Downs. In the previous race, they collaborated with Free Thought to take the Century Downs 770.
While Free Thought won his race on the lead, True Copy had to come from midpack. After she broke on top, several rivals surged ahead of her. But True Copy powered home late in the 400 yards to win by 1/2-length in :20.042, earning a 103 speed index. The $27,167 winner’s share pushed the filly’s earnings to $38,591.
If not for traffic trouble in one race, True Copy might be undefeated. She won her first two races, then finished third with the trouble and was promoted
to second upon a disqualification in the Jerry Stojan Memorial Futurity. Following that performance,
she captured two more races prior to the Canada
Cup Futurity, including a wire-to-wire win in the Evergreen Park Juvenile and a 2-length win in her trial to the Canada Cup Futurity as the fastest qualifier.
Dr. Ed Allred bred True Copy in California from Kansas Derby-G3 winner Realistically. The mare has produced four winners in eight starters, including stakes winner Vivid and stakes-placed Smithy.
Jose Rocha rode Honeys Pop A Tac (Tac It Like
A Man-Gols Honey Money Pop) to 2nd for trainer Buckey Stockwell & owner 4 B Stables. The gelding broke his maiden in a futurity trial in August. Knotty Knita (First Timber-Ima Jess A Streaker), bred, owned & trained by Wesley Oulton, finished 3rd under jockey J.B. Botello. The filly also ran 3rd in the Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge. Followed by First Prize Cruise (First Prize Doc-Eye Cruise), Bringonthewave (Wave Carver-Special Corona), Stripsteak (One Sweet Jess- Ruths Chris), Atomic Blondie (Birdzilla-TB-Sables Val) & Stole An Encore (Ivory James-Rare Encore).
