Two Rivers Stakes-G3
FERRARI JAMES
by John Moorehouse
You just can’t catch a Ferrari, and Ferrari James lived up to his sportscar namesake posting a blistering 107 speed index by racing to an impres- sive win by daylight in the $45,000 Two Rivers Stakes-G3 held Oct. 13 at Prairie Meadows.
Breaking from the inside starting gate, Ferrari James promptly grabbed a 1/2-length lead by the
first call, then doubled his separation as jockey Oscar Delgado steered him into the stretch. The Kirk Clark trainee held from there, winning by 1-length in :21.389.
Alfredo Botello owns Ferrari James, a four-year- old gelding who now holds four stakes victories as part of a 10(4)-3-2(1) overall record in 19 starts. The $26,100 prize from this event improved his total earnings to $211,432. All four stakes wins—three of which have been in restricted or graded races—have come at Prairie Meadows, where he has logged seven victories in eight total starts.
Bred by Weetona Stanley and W.E. Smith, Ferrari James remains the only stakes winner out of lightly raced Ferarri Fast Prize. She has produced 100% earners from15 starters, including top earner V Power, a half-brother to Ferrari James who holds a pair of runner-up efforts in stakes company— most recently in the 2017 Jack Brooks Stakes at Remington Park.
Bye Byefreighttrain (Freighttrain B-Bye Bye Bygones) finished 2nd under Benito Baca for owner/ breeder L.P. Frank and trainer Kasey Willis. Divas Candy Girl (Spit Curl Jess-Some Kinda Diva) fin- ished 3rd under Brayan Velazquez for owner Thomas Scheckel and trainer Jason Olmstead.
First Sweet Midnite (Sweet First Down-Midnite Soiree), Shiner Blond (Make It Anywhere-Blond Cartel), Freakin Runaway (Ocean Runaway-Streakin Freakin) and Boogies Special Dash (Walk Thru Fire- Boogie Special) completed the field. Three Olives N Smoke scratched.
Covered Bridges Stakes-G3
HAYNES BLUE BOY
by John Moorehouse
Haynes Blue Boy has found his stride at 870 yards. The 3-year-old gelding recorded his second straight victory, both at that distance, with a wire-
to-wire 2 3/4-length win in the $25,000 Covered Bridges Stakes-G3 at Prairie Meadows on Oct. 13.
Despite never having competed in a stakes event prior to this race, Haynes Blue Boy entered the event as the heavy favorite at less than even-money odds. The gelding won with ease, breaking on top from the 3-hole and building a commanding 3-length lead by the time he entered the stretch.
Charlton Hunt trains Haynes Blue Boy, who
had Stormy Smith in the irons for the trip that took just :45.313 and registered a 101 speed index. The win produced a $14,250 payday, improving his total bankroll to $37,192. Nancy McCoy home-bred Haynes Blue Boy, who logged his third win in 12 career starts. Two of the three came during this cur- rent streak, which began Sept. 9 in an allowance race.
McCoy also home-bred stakes-placed win-
ner Wave Corona, the dam of Haynes Blue Boy.
The mare has a pair of third place finishes in the 2011 Hialeah Lassie Futurity and the 2012 AQHA Members Plus Stakes at Prairie Meadows. Haynes Blue Boy is the only foal out of Wave Corona to date.
Hiclass Man (Brimmerton-Hiclass Kamikaze) placed a steady second under David Pinon for owner Jo Rice and trainer Patrick Swan. Little Jo Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Jo Jos Country Chick) hit the board in third place for Sunflower Stables, LLC. The Stacy Belt trainee had Benito Baca in the irons.
The remaining order of finish was Blue Eyed Andy (Furrtreeous-Flooz Baby), Im The Key (Shazoom-Royal Classic Chick), Wicked Valentine (One Famous Eagle-Only The Wicked), No Regrets Here (Favorite Cartel-Duplicate Check) & Country Man Jazz (Bono Jazz-Country Mans Chick). Also A Feature scratched.
Altoona Derby
BORN TO B BAD
by Tracy Gantz
Born To B Bad has been special to owners Cody Bowling and Melissa Slayton since he was foaled and is good at winning no matter what the location. He
broke his maiden at Ruidoso Downs and has since won at Remington Park, Fair Meadows, and most recently Prairie Meadows in the Oct. 14 Altoona Derby.
Born To B Bad won his Sept. 29 trial to the Altoona Derby wire-to-wire as the final qualifier. Despite that, the gelding was favored to win at 13-10. With Benito Baca aboard, Born To B Bad stumbled and swerved at the start, but managed to overcome the trouble. He dueled with Attack The Wind and prevailed by a head in :19.779 for 400 yards, earning a 92 speed index. The $58,241 winner’s share pushed the gelding’s earnings to $189,221.
Tammy Johnson trains Born To B Bad, and she and her husband, Mike Wakefield, had prepared him from the start. Born To B Bad won last year’s Ruidoso Juvenile Challenge-G3, and this year he scored in the Speedhorse Derby. The gelding also finished second in the 2016 AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 and third in this year’s Ruidoso Derby Challenge.
Slayton bred Born To B Bad in Texas in partnership with N.R. Stevenson out of 3-time winner Dosvedanya. She has produced 100% earners from three starters. Born To B Bad is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Attack The Wind (Walk Thru Fire-Attack The Cartel) was 2nd under Cesar Gomez for Cesar Nunez & trainer Julio Corral. Corona Springs (Corona Cartel- Aquafina) ran 3rd under Brayan Velazquez for Thomas Scheckel & trainer Jason Olmstead.
