JESS BEIN THE HERO
by Michael Compton
Jess Bein The Hero continued his 2017 hot streak on Oct. 6, winning the $20,000 Evangeline Downs Dash for his fourth stakes score of the year. Ridden by Manuel Gutierrez, Jess Bein The Hero, sent off as the 4-5 favorite, shot to the lead
at the start of the 220-yard dash. The black colt retained command through the lane and won wire- to-wire by 1/2-length over Sweet Bru, who offered a game chase under Ricardo Hernandez Jr. but proved no match for the winner.
Jess Bein The Hero stopped the timer in a lively :11.646, just ticks off the track record of :11.530 set by FDD Going Grand in 2014. The winner earned a speed index of 104 for trainer Miguel Rodriguez and owner Juan F. Martinex-Labastida.
With the win, Jess Bein The Hero ran his record to 9-6(4)-2(2)-0 and boosted his earnings to $98,553, having also won this year’s Swift Stakes, Streakin La Jolla Stakes and Miss Polly Classic.

HEZA DASHA FIRE
by Tracy Gantz
Heza Dasha Fire, the World Champion of 2015, soared to new heights in winning the Oct. 15 Robert L. Boniface Invitational Championship-G1.
He went over $2 million in earnings and became the first Washington-bred in history to hit that mile- stone, and just the sixth horse to win back-to-back runnings of the race.
As is his custom, Heza Dasha Fire went off the heavy favorite in the Boniface. With regular rider Cruz Mendez up, the 5-year-old gelding broke slower than usual, in fourth, but came on strongly at the end to post a 3/4-length victory in :21.451 for 440 yards.
Don & Kathy Meneely and their son, Shawn, bred Heza Dasha Fire in Washington and race him in the name of S-Quarter K LLC. Jose Flores is the trainer. Heza Dasha Fire was winning his 9th stakes event and his record is now 20-15(9)-4(3)-0.
The gelding is out of graded stakes winner Dasha Freda, dam of 100% earners from 6 starters, includ- ing Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding Ima Fearless Hero and stakes winner Heza Fearless Dasher.
Multiple graded stakes winner Bodacious Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Bodacious Dream) finished second by a neck. Ricky Ramirez piloted the 5-year- old gelding for trainer Jaime Gomez and owner Johnny Trotter.

Wild West Futurity
MOONIE BLUES
by Tracy Gantz
Moonie Blues, in bulleting away quickly in the Oct. 29 Wild West Futurity at Los Alamitos, avoided traffic to her inside that ultimately led to
two disqualifications. The incident compromised the chances of odds-on favorite Yanque, who officially ended up 6th.
Jockey Jesus Ayala got Moonie Blues away on top from post eight, and they never were headed throughout the 350 yards. Moonie Blues won by 1-length in :17.644 and earned a career high 92 speed index. The $54,222 winner’s share pushed the filly’s earnings to $63,582.
Jaime Gomez trains Moonie Blues, now a four- time winner, for owner Lisa Anderson, who bred
the filly in Washington from 2-time winner/Grade 2 finalist Stuckonafeeling. All of her 5 starters have won, including multiple Graded stakes-placed win- ner Go Black Benny. Moonie Blues is her top earner.
Cowgirl N Up (Texas Icon-Secret Return) finished second, but she was disqualified to ninth after the bumping incident. That moved third- place finisher PF Paddy Dashair (Dashair-Pretty N Famous) to second. Cesar DeAlba piloted PF Paddy Dashair for trainer Lin Melton. Tony Greaves owns and co-bred PF Paddy Dashair.
Favorite Fire Boy (Favorite Cartel-Club Pro), who finished fourth, was moved up to third. Jose Nicasio rode the colt for trainer Monty Arossa and owner Aron Saenz. Krash Your Party (Krash Cartel-Hasta La Veesta) and Warhock (Zoomin For Bux-Copa Show Girl) finished 5th and 6th and were promoted to 4th and 5th, respectively, upon the first disqualification. L Bar D Classic Trip (Mr. Nightlinger TB-Be First Rose), who finished 7th, was disqualified and placed 10th, moving Yanque (Favorite Cartel-Red Hawk Chick) to 6th, R Sturdy Boy (One Sweet Jess-YR Brown Lucy) to 7th & CM Once Ina Bluemoon (Ivory James-Cool Blue Corona) to 8th.
