The Gold Medal Jess colt Jirau Gold tops the Haras Santo Angela Sale in Brazil. Gianni Franco Samaja consigned the colt, who was purchased for $178,000 U.S. by Haras Primavera.

The California Horse Racing Board unanimously votes to extend the clenbuterol regulations currently
in effect at Los Alamitos to include all horses of any breed racing in California, most notably changing the suggested withdrawal time from 4 days to 21 days.
June 4
Lightning sparked the Little Bear Fire that threatened areas surrounding Ruidoso Downs in Lincoln County, New Mexico. The fire eventually burned 44,000 acres and destroyed more than 300 buildings, with damages estimated in the $250 million range.

Canterbury Park and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) announce a ten-year cooperative marketing agreement that will increase live purses at the racetrack and end the pursuit of racino legislation. SMSC has committed approximately $75 million, with plans to utilize joint marketing opportunities between Canterbury Park and nearly SMSC’s Mystic Lake Casino Hotel.

The Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium announces that Fort Erie Race Track will permanently close its doors on Dec.
31 after 115 years of operation. The track lost funding of nearly $6 million when the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation announced the end of the slot machines in
early 2013. Two days later, the Ontario Government said to would provide up to $50 million for three years of transitional funding to help racetracks cope with the loss of slot machines.

The Arizona Department of Gaming raids an unlicensed horse race in Picacho, Arizona, and apprehends five men suspected of running the operation. All of the horses were returned to their owners.

The Final Fertilization Golf Tournament raises more than $64,000 for the Race Track Chaplaincy of America and the Permanently Disabled Jockey’s Fund.

A federal grand jury in the Western District
of Texas unseales an indictment charging 14 defendants in connection with a conspiracy to launder Los Zetas drug distribution proceeds by purchasing, training, breeding and racing American Quarter Horses in the United States. Federal authorities arrests seven people in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and California, and took possession of horses at Los Alamitos, Ruidoso Downs, and Zule Farm.

Delta Downs releases the first ruling for dermorphin against trainer Alvin Smith Jr. Several other trainers received dermorphin rulings soon after, including Darrel Soileau, Alonza Loya, Heath Taylor, Gonzalo Gonzalez, Keith Charles, Kyi Lormand, Steve Garrison and Anthony Agilar.

The Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association hosts the Betting On A Cure fundraiser, raising more than $19,300 for Rein In Cancer, which supports the Shirley Bowman Nutrition Clinic at the OU Cancer Center, and the Children’s Hospital Foundation in Oklahoma City.

Ubuyillfly wins the first leg of the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Triple Crown, the $240,760 Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1 at Remington Park. Ubuyillfly is owned by Charles & Mary Hainline, trained by Eddie Willis, and was ridden by Roy Brooks.

Dr. Tommy Hays and Wade Siegel are elected to serve three- year terms on the nine-member American Quarter Horse Association Racing Council. The Racing Council is elected by
the 78 members of the AQHA Racing Committee.
