 Shue Fly Stakes-RG2
SLEW BY YOU
  by John Moorehouse
By the standards set at the betting window, Slew By You’s victory in the Shue Fly Stakes-RG2 on Jan. 5 at Sunland Park was considered an upset at nearly 10-1. Slew By
You’s trainer, however, didn’t consider the filly’s first stakes win nearly so shocking.
“We knew the filly had a chance,” said Juan Gonzalez Jr., who assists his father Juan Sr., the official trainer of Slew By You. “It wasn’t an upset to us at all. We were definitely expect- ing her to be there. Obviously, she exceeded everyone’s expectations.”
Slew By You broke her maiden at Zia Park on Nov. 26, following that up with another win in a trial to the Shue Fly on Dec. 14 at Sunland.
“By then, we knew it was her time,” said Gonzalez Jr., who is pursuing his master’s degree in civil engineering.
The Gonzalezes also felt good about Slew By You’s chances when examining the feats of her siblings. Other Quarter Horses foaled by Slew By You’s dam, Slew A Po TB, include fellow stakes winner Slewacidal and Slew Ta Fame, who finished third in the Rainbow Futurity-G1. Both horses, Juan Jr. observed, followed a similar track by getting off to slow starts in their competitive careers.
“You take a look at her
brothers and sisters, that’s
the way they are. Especially
the fillies,” Gonzalez Jr.
said. “The sisters, we were
checking out how they were
running. Many of them have
done the exact same thing.
The 2-year-olds, they don’t begin running until they turn 3.”
Slew By You definitely kicked off her second season in fine fashion. Her owners
at the Valle Guadiana Corporation reaped a $118,814 payday for this victory, which saw the filly need all 400 yards to secure the win. Slew By You started a bit off the pace, though she did make a clean break from the No. 7 gate, and was running third going into the stretch. Jockey Ramon Sanchez urged Slew By You to catch Taleas Liberty in the last few strides and win her third straight race. It was also the fifth time that a Shue Fly winner has come out of the barn of Juan Gonzalez Sr.
Sanchez, a two-time winner of the All American Futurity, steered Slew By You to the finish line in :19.345, registering an 87 speed index. MJ Farms bred the filly.
Slew By You has a busy docket already for 2013, as she is being pointed toward the NMHBA and Sunburst races, also at Sunland.
Taleas Liberty (Jesse James Jr-La Talea), the biggest longshot in the 10-horse field
at 42-1 odds, finished a close second for owner Eusebio Sanchez and trainer Ramon Ochoa. Jockey Oscar Rincon did the riding.
An Absolut Diamond (Ketel Won-The Millennium Star) found his best strides too late in the race to challenge for the lead but placed third for owners Sandy Farris, Marc Jungers and Lisa McMinn. The Michael Joiner trainee had G.R. Carter Jr. in the irons.
The remaining order of finish in the Shue Fly Stakes was One Blazin Kimbo (Chicks
A Blazin-Kimbo With Class), Krazy Good (Ketel Won-Thirty Fourth Street), Coronas Hot Pink (Corona Caliente-Nifty Pink TB), Jess Sue Me (Jesse James Jr-Susies Girl Sally), Jess Rueben James (Jesse James Jr-Nitros Cash), Runin Sixes (Sixes Royal-Perfect Sevens) and Fames Magic (Dash Ta Fame- Orlana’s Magic TB).
