First Down Dash Handicap-G3
KAS ON FLY
by Tracy Gantz
Kas On Fly followed an unusual route for Quarter Horses. Bred in Brazil, the horse was a track-record setter and stakes winner
of the GP Torneio before being imported to the United States. While his racing record
of four wins in his native country meant he couldn’t start in maiden races in this country, it didn’t take him long to become a graded stakes winner. He accomplished that feat in the Dec. 22 First Down
Dash Handicap-G3 at Los Alamitos in California.
Paul Jones trains Kas On Fly for owner Ralph Lima Terra.
“It took Kas On Fly a couple of races to get used to the way things are done in the United States. He was a really good horse in Brazil,” said Jones, “but they have racing lanes on the track and run during the daytime. It took him a little bit of time
to figure things out, but he’s now won two races in a row.”
In the 400-yard First Down Dash, Kas
On Fly broke outwardly and bumped a bit with Down Rite Royal. Jockey Cesar DeAlba straightened out Kas On Fly, and they went right to the lead. Kas On Fly held off a determined Jumpn Shake as well as the closing favorite, Sparky E Boy, to win by a half-length
in a time of :19.785.
Kas On Fly has won two
of five races at Los Alamitos, with two seconds. Marcelo Jorge bred him from the Brazilian-bred mare Blazen Ofglory 01ibr. Kas On Fly is the mare’s only offspring to race in the U.S. The second dam, Kas On Me, was bred in the U.S. and is a daughter of the Thoroughbred Coup De Kas and the Go For Bugs mare Betchabugs On Me.
Gregorio Arriaga rode Jumpn Shake (Jumpn- Jess Shakem) to second for owners Chad Hart and Bobby Cox and trainer Jaime Gomez. The colt won the 2012 Anaheim Handicap.
Reed Pierson’s homebred Sparky E Boy (Hawkinson-Yr Brown Lucy) finished third for jockey Rodrigo Aceves. Jesse Godinez trains the gelding, who captured the Bank of America Los Alamitos Championship Challenge-G3 in August.
Completing the field were Storm Feet (Make It Anywhere-Special Copauino), Cash Him Out (Separatist-Cash Her Out), Costly Man (Walk Thru Fire-Costly), Hot Hitter (Walk Thru Fire-Chickasis), Significant Cartel (Corona Cartel-Dash Master Miss), Down Rite Royal (First Down Dash-Royal Delphias Chick), and Thinkrich N Royal (First Down Dash-A Royal Goddess).

Au Revoir Stakes
MR FALLEN ANGEL
by Tracy Gantz
Mr Fallen Angel capitalized on a quick start and the ability to negotiate a turn for his first stakes victory. He also put himself
in select company because in the Dec. 20
Au Revoir Stakes, he became one of the few Quarter Horses to win on the turf. Evangeline Downs cards the unique Au Revoir for Quarter Horses at 870 yards on the grass as part of its closing-day card. This is only the second year the track has
offered the turf race.
Mr Fallen Angel, with Jeff Jerman aboard, zipped to the front right out of the gate. His entrymate, TF Tantalizin Eyes, nearly wrested the lead from Mr Fallen Angel as the field headed into the turn, but TF Tantalizin Eyes blew the turn badly and was never a factor after that.
Keepn It Kool remained close to Mr Fallen Angel
around the bend until Mr Fallen Angel spurted forward when they reached the stretch. Keepn It Kool tried once more
to catch Mr Fallen Angel to no avail. Mr Fallen Angel scored by an easy 2 1/4 lengths in :47.524.
Kellie Hebert acquired Mr Fallen Angel and her husband Randy Hebert began training him prior to the gelding’s victory in a 400-yard
claiming race at the Fair Grounds on Aug. 12. Since then, Mr Fallen Angel has stretched out to 870-yard races with good results—one win and two seconds prior to the Au Revoir. He has now earned $56,917 lifetime.
Mark Saenz bred Mr Fallen Angel in Louisiana from stakes-placed Angels Quick Dash. The mare has produced three winners in four starters. By Royal Quick
Dash, Angels Quick Dash is a half-sister to stakes winners Eye Am The Best, Logical Favorite, and Way To Hussle.
Second-place Keepn It Kool (First To Shine-Kool K. J.-TB) was coming off three consecutive Evangeline wins. Alfonso Lujan regularly pilots the gelding for owner David Lee Vance and trainer Danny Eldridge.
Donald Watson rode Slinkys Fortune (Dashs Slinky-Chasing A Fortune) to third. Henry Padgett owns and trains the 2004 geld- ing, who won the 2011 Au Revoir.
Completing the field were The Canyon Cat (Panther Mountain-Streakin First Down), Dr Drip (First To Shine-High Seas Operator), Dirty Boy Friend (Dirty Coup-Go Girl Friend), and TF Tantalizing Eyes (Plain Eye Opening-Tantalizing Smile). Rakin The Cash Holme was scratched.
