He Is The Risingstar remains impervious at 550 yards. The five-year-gelding improved to 4-0 in races at that distance, taking his latest in the $20,000
Barbra B Handicap on Jan. 20 at Los Alamitos.
All four of the gelding’s wins in stakes company
have come at 550-yards at Los Alamitos, including the past two runnings of the Paul B. Ford Memorial Handicap. This also marked the second straight year that he has won the Barbra B Handicap. He now holds seven victories in 19 starts, and the $11,000 prize boosted his total earnings to $118,760.
Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches, LP, owns the gelding, who was prepped by trainer Paul Jones. He Is The Risingstar broke on top from the 6-gate, grabbing a 1-length lead by the first call. He stayed in front the rest of the way, holding on to defeat his nearest rival, Miss Loujean, by a neck.
Cesar DeAlba rode the gelding to victory, covering the 550 yards in :26.700 to post a 116 speed index. That stands as the fastest time He Is The Risingstar ever has recorded at that distance, although the race was hand-timed.
Mercy Hinklins Horse Farm LLC, bred He Is The Risingstar out of Meddlin Mischief, a 1993 mare who was stakes-placed in the Wind Country and Solano derbies. She has foaled 23 starters out of 32 offspring, including three stakes winners.
Keith Cragmyle trains 2nd placed Miss Loujean TB (Unusual Heat-Tempting Date) and co-owns
her with Paul Lewis. Vinnie Bednar did the riding. Mickey Ward (FDD Dynasty-A Mere Formality) hit the board in third for Carolyn and Ralph Fales. Matt Fales is the trainer and Cruz Mendez was aboard.
The remaining order of finish was Front And Center (Walk Thru Fire-Katie Katella), Dustys Classy Dash (Looking For Chicks-Classy Mama), Getit Quick (Favorite Cartel-Getit Together) and Kismet (Favorite Cartel-Make A Run).

Bumping at the start of a race is a problem
almost every racehorse faces at some point. Ilikethewayshewalks has encountered more than her
share of tough starts, but even though it happened again, she was able to overcome it to win the Seal Beach Handicap at Los Alamitos on Jan. 28.
Ilikethewayshewalks brushed with Newport Coaster coming out of the gate in the 330-yard Seal Beach Handicap. It didn’t impede her, and at jockey Jesus Ayala’s urging, she flew to the wire leading throughout to win by a head in :16.764.
It was her second victory in eight starts and her first stakes win. The $8,250 winner’s share gives
the filly a total bankroll of $16,425. Last year, Ilikethewayshewalks finished third in the California Breeders’ Freshman Fillies Stakes.
Mike Casselman trains Ilikethewayshewalks for owner/breeder Steve D. Burns DVM, who bred the filly in California from winner Septacular. Ilikethewayshewalks is a full sister to Separate Fire, 2011 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly and winner of that year’s Kindergarten Futurity-G1 and Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1. Septacular, a half-sister to stakes winners Meganette and Dashs Secret, has produced six winners in 15 starters.
Abigail Kawananakoa’s homebred Trippys Royal Jess (Apollitical Jess-Trippys Royal Dash) finished second. Cesar DeAlba rode the filly for trainer Christopher O’Dell. Trippys Royal Jess has won three of her nine starts.
Dr. Ed Allred’s homebred Tough To Figure (Walk Thru Fire-Big Jan) ran third with Gary Boag aboard. Scott Willoughby trains the filly.
Completing the field were Start Somethin Bad (Pappasito-Letsgetitstarted), Newport Coaster (TR Dasher-Wave Babe), Keep It Classy (FDD Dynasty- Eyesa Jumpn), and Glen Ellyn (Favorite Cartel-Truly A Delightful).
