Mean Competitor Stakes
BLUE EYED ANDY
by Michael Compton
Despite breaking from the 7-gate, Blue Eyed Andy, a specialist at the marathon 870-yard distance, took advantage of a rail run to win the
$23,750 Mean Competitor Stakes at Canterbury Park on Aug. 10.
Ridden by Berkley Packer, Blue Eyed Andy was guided to the rail by his pilot after No Such Tellin threw his head and steadied at the break of the 870- yard test. Blue Eyed Andy charged to the lead and drew clear in the stretch to lead by as many as 3-lengths.
He crossed the finish 1 1/2-lengths clear of runner-up Streakin in the City who closed ground late to secure the place spot. Race favorite Hiclass Man vied 3-wide around the turn when racing in second position and weakened slightly in the lane to finish third.
In winning the initial stakes race of his career, Blue Eyed Andy stopped the timer in :47.042, earning an 83 speed index. The gelding is owned by Aspen Partnership and trained by Allen Hybsha. The win improved his record to 37-7(1)-7-8 and increased his bankroll to $82,702.
Richard Joneson bred Blue Eyed Andy out of lightly raced Flooz Baby. She has produced 100% money earners from six starters. Blue Eyed Andy is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Streakin In The City (Streakin Six Cartel-Zip Of Fools TB) finished second under Marcus Swiontek for owners Gary & Susan Mangus and trainer Randall Weidner.

Brigand Stakes
ROCK ABOUT IT
by Danny Camp
It was a dark and stormy day for the running of the $20,000 Brigand Stakes, but Rock About It was not both- ered by the gloomy sky at Ruidoso Downs on August 11.
It was so dark, in fact, that the first half of the race could not be seen. When the horses emerged from
the blackness, jockey Jaime Leos and Rock About It crossed the line 3/4-length in front of the field.
They finished the 550 yards in a New Track Record time of :26.327, earning an impressive 111 speed index.
Rock About It brought home the $12,000 win- ner’s share of the purse for owner Rockin J Running Horses and trainer Tammy Johnson, boosting his total lifetime earnings to $137,941.
This victory marks his third consecutive win at 550 yards and second New Track Record at the distance.
He now has a race record of 18-6(2)-3(1)-2(1), including a victory in the SLM Big Daddy Stakes-G3 earlier this year. He was also a runner-up in the 2017 Ruidoso Derby Challenge as well as third in the Dash For Cash Derby-G3 the same year.
Sarah E. Donaldson Rioux bred Rock About
It out of unraced Not Sable Shes Rose. She has produced 100% winners from two starters, including Regard The Rose, winner of the 2017 Arapahoe Park Futurity. Rock About It is her top earner.
In Class (Jesse James Jr-Shez Classy Now) was second under Ricky Ramirez for owners Bob and Sissie McClure and trainer Harvey Baeza.
