                                Easily A Possum Classic
TEMPTING SPLASH DASH
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The first of the three races that make up the Triple Crown of the Quarter Mile at the Hipodromo de las Americas took place on March 20. The Easily A Possum Clasico, which enrolled 12 three-year-old sprinters to contest a prize of $420,800 Pesos (approxi- mately US $21,948), was held over a distance of 350 yards. The other two competitions
for the Triple Crown are the AMCCCCM Clasico, scheduled for May 21, and the Mexican Derby, to be held July 30.
Favored in the odds for the Easily A Possum Clasico was Dans Jess, who closed with a 2.30 in favor, followed closely by The Crusador (2.50), a son of First Down Dash in his first participation in the oval track of the Mexican capital and coming from Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico. Dans Jess, for his
part, has been forging an interesting trajec- tory expressed in three consecutive victories, one of them in the Jesus “Nuchi” Jiménez Sánchez Clasico and another in the National Championship Day of the Charro.
When the warm-up phase was finished, Beer Wagon, representative of the Cuadra El Cuartel, was scratched from the starting position. The remaining 11 contestants broke with a clean start, looking to harvest the first jewel of the Crown.
It was Tempting Splash Dash (#8) who moved
the fastest out of the gates, freely taking the right side of the track, followed closely by Agent Provocateur (#9). Dans Jess (#5) did the same in the center of the avenue under constant pressure by A Sweeping Triumph (#1A). However, it was the power of Tempting Splash Dash that won the 350-yard contest in the stretch by 3/4-length over Dans Jess, who outscored
Agent Provocateur by a head.
The winner set the time
of :17.18 for a 98 speed index
under the wise command
of Mario Alberto López
Marmolejo, adding points to
the record of owner Cuadra
Zamarrero and trainer Julio
de Jesús Valencia Hernández.
With only six outings, the
son of Tempting Dash and
out of Thebabeisback (by
Splash Bac) was credited with
his first classic after placing
third in the Juvenile Championship in 2016, and he increased his earnings that already exceed 580 thousand pesos. He is the second son of Tempting Dash who in the current season won a clasico at the Hipódromo de las Américas, after Tempting One was awarded the AQHA Maiden Challenge on March 5.
A race that traditionally involves fillies and foals bred in the United States, this time was no exception, since the winner comes from the American breeding of Bob McClure.
Dans Jess (Teller Cartel - Jess A Topper) crossed the finish line in second under the guidance of Eddi Cuéllar for owner Rancho El
Suspiro and trainer Antonio León Ramos.
In third place was the filly Agent Provocateur (Walk Thru Fire - Favored), led by Moisés González García for Cuadra San Lázaro de Arará and trainer Pedro Ríos Torres.
Followed by A Sweeping Triumph (Bedouin Cartel – Lusi), Cruzin And Boozin (Tempting Dash – Penélope Cruzin), Ballistic Cartel (Sean Roy – Hempens Treat), Carl Fourteen (Ivory
James – Sweethearts Lady), JP Specially Special (Specially Alluring – Sheza Special Devon), RG Connie My Love (High Rate Of Return – Note The Chick), Louisiana Run (Louisiana Senator – Confidential Run & The Crusador (First Down Dash – Eyell Fool Ya).
