Mile High Futurity
VICTORIOUS CARTEL
by John Moorehouse
Victorious Cartel picked a fine time to post the first victory of his career.
The two-year-old black gelding broke
his maiden and simultaneously earned black type when he won the 400-yard $99,061 Mile High Futurity on Aug. 11 at Arapahoe Park in Colorado.
Bred by Hub City Farms LLC, Victorious Cartel runs for owner Noe Cano.
The gelding made his debut out on May 31
at Arapahoe Park. That was in the trials to the Rocky Mountain Futurity. Victorious Cartel fin- ished well in third, but didn’t qualify to the finals.
The gelding’s next race was in the July
26 trials to the Mile High Futurity. He got away slow in his heat, but flew past his rivals to finish second to qualify with the third fastest time on the ladder.
For the Mile High Futurity finals, how- ever, there was no stopping him.
Trained by Miguel Pena, Victorious Cartel drew the outside starting gate in the 10-horse field.
He broke in the middle of the pack when they opened the gates. Although Victorious Cartel drifted in, he held on and was run- ning fourth at the first call. That’s when jockey Alfredo Triana, Jr. made his move.
Victorious Cartel worked his way up through the ranks and found himself in second place by the time then-leader Beeline Dash reached the stretch.
Triana then led Victorious Cartel past his rival to win the race by 3/4-lengths.
The race was worth a $39,626 payday that pushed Victorious Cartel’s total earnings to $41,078. It was not a bad return for a geld- ing that Cano purchased for $14,000 at last October’s Los Alamitos Equine Sale at Los Alamitos Race Course in California. His race record shows he has never been off the board
in his short career so far and stands at 3-1(1)-1-1.
The stakes-winning 400- yard trip took :19.590, gen- erating a 101 speed index.
Hub City Farms also owns Victorious Cartel’s dam, Princess Chloe, a stakes-placed 2004 mare. Princess Chloe won four races in her day, finishing second in the Carmel Handicap.
Princess Chloe has pro- duced five foals and four race starters that include
three winners. With this victory, Victorious Cartel becomes the lone stakes winner of the brood as well as the leading money earner for his dam.
With this win, Victorious Cartel adds to an already full blacktype family. His dam is a stakes placed half-sister to stakes winner Proud Fame. His second dam is a half-sibling to stakes winner Velociter and is out of stakes winner Princess Attrel.
