Pie In The Sky came back at three to a record of five starts with one win and two seconds. He was a stakes finalist in the Rainbow Derby and the All American Derby. Pie In The Sky retired with 13 starts and five wins, two seconds, four thirds and earnings of $600,828.
Urschel called Pie In The Sky’s lackluster performance at three the ‘All American Syndrome,’ as his win made him a valuable stud prospect. Urschel he didn’t push the horse. Pie In The Sky went on to become a sire and was named the
1984 AQHA Leading Freshman Sire of money earners. His foals that year earned $1,354,170.
He went on to sire the earners of $8,573,658 with 583 starters and 42 stakes winners. His leading money earner was Heavenly, winner of the 1984 Rainbow Futurity and 1985 All American Derby.
She earned $1,045,796 and was named the 1986 Champion Aged Mare. Pie In The Sky is also the broodmare sire of Strawfly Special, a leading sire of over $25.8 million in earnings including 2001 All American Futurity winner Ausual Suspect.
Pie In The Sky lived up to his name as he reached for his piece of history, traveling in a most unusual way to get his victory, giving the Urschels their first taste of the All American Dream. The Urschels came back in 1981
with another colt named Special Effort
to win All American Futurity as well as
the Ruidoso Triple Crown by winning
the Kansas Futurity and the Rainbow
Futurity – giving them a very unique
place in history. I guess they were still reaching for that Pie In The Sky.
