Strawberry Silk wins the 1989 All American Futurity A good place to start telling the story of how
Strawberry Silk won the All American Futurity
i is with her dam, Painted Bug by Shawne Bug.
P Painted Bug raced from 1982 to 1985. She won the Ruidoso 550 Championships and the 1982 All American Futurity Third Consolation the same year Mr Master Bug won the All American. Painted Bug was third in the 1984 All American Gold Cup, a race won by Mr Master Bug for trainer Jack Brooks. Painted Bug had been on the trainer’s radar all this time and when her yearling filly came into the 1988 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, Brooks recommended her to Jackie Spencer because of his respect for her mother. That filly was Strawberry Silk by Beduino TB. Spencer bought her for $100,000.
Strawberry Silk started her race career at Sunland Park with a maiden win and then a first
in her trial and the finals of the Sun Country Futurity. She then went to Ruidoso for the trials of the Kansas Futurity, where she won her trial and placed second in the finals. She then won her trial for the Rainbow Futurity, again running second in the finals. Then came the trials to the All American. She won both of her trials to qualify for the finals
– Strawberry Silk and the other nine finalists made their way to the finals through two sets of trials. It is the second set of trials that is interesting. The 10
