One Dashing Eagle
see One Dashing Eagle’s pedigree on page 70
In 2012 we watched One Dashing Eagle become the first horse to win three races worth $1,000,000 or more in a single year. In watching him accomplish this feat, we got
to see a horse that won these races with relative ease. He didn’t necessarily run a straight line each time, but he was still dominant in each of these important races. His success on the track this past year has made him the 2012 AQHA Racing World Champion, AQHA Racing Champion 2-Year-Old and the AQHA Racing Champion 2-Year-Old Colt. One Dashing Eagle made $2,079,065—a single year earnings record for owners Jose De La Torre, Gustavo De La Torre and Jorge Carmona’s San Gregorio Stable.
As his trainer and co-owner, Jose De La Torre has said, “One Dashing Eagle is a horse of a lifetime.” He earns this type of accolade because he exudes excellence in what he has done and by doing this he has added a major chapter to the legacy of his breeders, Harvey, Jerry and Dale—the Allred Brothers.
A motto used by the Allred Brothers has been “An Arizona Tradition of Excellence” and that motto certainly fits the Allred breeding program. When you go back into the history of this breeding program you find that much of their success has come through mare lines or mare families. Let’s look at where this tradition of excellence got started and where it comes into play today.
We start with a mare named June Bug Allred. C.V. Allred, the father of the Allred Brothers, bred this 1946 mare, who was sired by Silver Cord TB and out of Gold Nugget, by Red Joe Of Arizona. She was bred to a Thoroughbred stallion named Just Again, a son of Ariel, to produce Just A Bug.
Just A Bug is the next mare in this line and she became the dam of Jozona, by Barjo. Barjo was a AAA- rated stakes winner sired by Three Bars and out of Betty Joe, by Red Joe Of Arizona. Barjo was the winner of races like the Bright Eyes Handicap. He was bred by Melville H. Haskell and owned by C.V. Allred and Sons.
In 1962 Jozona was bred back to her sire, Barjo, and produced Teasin Tina, another AAA-rated runner. This gives Teasin Tina a breeding pattern of 1x2 to Barjo and a 3x4x5 to Red Joe Of Arizona. Red Joe of Arizona was sired by Joe Reed P-3 and out of Little Red Nell, making him a three-quarter brother to Joe Reed II, the sire of Leo.
Teasin Tina produced Perfect Fit, a AAA-rated race mare, in 1968. Perfect Fit was sired by Saint Mark, a son of Top Deck that was out of Martini Girl, by Bartender. Saint Mark was the sire of Mark T Bar, the Allred runner that is the AQHA all-time leader in races won. He won 64 of his 105 starts.
