PJ Chick In Black’s story is a shining reminder that everyone is equal when it comes to horse racing and even the “little guy”
can make it big.

Chick In Black and brought in Denny Bowen and Susie Taylor as partners on the filly. Bowen is a racetrack shoer, Tayor ponies horses.
“This is a dream come true for them,” Draper said of his longtime friends. “They are walking on cloud nine, and that’s just great.”
PJ Chick In Black gave her connections plenty of reasons to be on cloud nine, starting with her first race on March 16 in a trial to the New Mexico Spring Futurity-RG2. She returned to win the finals convincingly by one length, prompting her owners to supplement her to the Ruidoso Futurity-G1. Again, the results were the same, if not even better.
PJ Chick In Black romped to a three-length win in her Ruidoso Futurity trial, then came back to overcome a troubled start and win the $600,000 finals by a neck. That win prompted Carl Draper to call the filly “phenomenal,” an adjective many would agree with soon, if they didn’t already.
It took a $50,000 supplemental payment to make PJ Chick In Black eligible for the All American Futurity trials. Two months after her Ruidoso Futurity score, PJ Chick In Black ran the race of her life, winning her trial to the All American Futurity-G1 by a stunning 5 3/4 lengths to set the fastest qualifying time of :21.081. By this time, the Drapers had sold their interest in the speedster and Bowen and Taylor had a new partner in Jack Smith Farms and trainer in John Stinebaugh.
Despite her heavily favored status, PJ Chick In Black suffered her only loss of the year in the All American final, finishing sixth. In all, she ended the year with over a half-million in earnings and five wins from six starts.
PJ Chick In Black is expected to return
to Ruidoso Downs in 2013 for the track’s lucrative derby schedule. She could compete in any or all of the three Grade 1 derbies—the $750,000-est. Ruidoso Derby, $1 million-est. Rainbow Derby and All American Derby.
After being supplemented to the race, PJ Chick In Black wins the $600,000 Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity.
