Highly regarded as a 2-year-old, Hez Our Secret qualified for the Rainbow Futurity-G1 but was scratched after emer-
gency colic surgery. He recovered, and went
on to finish fourth in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1 to end his juvenile season. Returning as a 3-year-old, Hez Our Secret hooked the toughest horses in the country at every turn.
Owner Johnny Trotter, a member of the AQHA Executive Committee, has always maintained Hez Our Secret is a better horse than his record shows, and with good reason. The colt made the first start of his sophomore season in an allowance race, finishing third behind eventual All American Derby-G1 final- ist Testing The Ice. In his Ruidoso Derby-G1 trial, he drew into the same race as champions Ochoa and Feature Mr Bojangles, who ran first and second. After winning (in a dead- heat) his trial to the All American Derby, Hez Our Secret again faced the monster Ochoa in the final, settling for second. Trotter, a staunch supporter of racetrack chaplaincy programs, donated half of Hez Our Secret’s earnings from that race to the Ruidoso Racetrack Chaplaincy.
Changing course, Hez Our Secret went
to California where he won a trial to the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1 and was just a neck off the winner in the final. He successfully faced older horses in the Z. Wayne Griffin Director’s Trial, winning and earning a spot in the Champion Of Champions, where he then ran fourth to Champion Rylees Boy.
“(My wife) Jana and I got into the racehorse business because it was something we could do together,” Trotter said in an AQHA interview. “We had One Famous Eagle, and he’s one in
a million. Jana and I consider everything that has happened to us in the racehorse business a big-time blessing. Having a good racehorse is about the blessing of having a good horse. It’s not about the money, it’s not about winning at Ruidoso, it’s about good horses.”
With Hez Our Secret, the 2012 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt, the Trotters have definitely found another good horse, one who consistently proves he is better than his record shows.
Hez Our Secret goes wire-to-wire winning the Z Wayne Griffin Directors Stakes at Los Alamitos.
