Champion Of Champions-G1, 1st Bank Of America Challenge Championship-G1, 1st Bank Of America Sunland Championship Challenge-G2, 2nd KOFX-FM Stakes-G3, 6th Remington Park Invitational-G1, 10th Go Man Go Handicap-G1
It isn’t always easy to pick up a horse in the middle of the season—especially a good horse. The pressure is high to keep the horse
performing at the same level, and when that level is in Grade 1 company, the stakes are even higher. Such was the case with Rylees Boy, who transferred to trainer Paul Jones’ barn midway through his 2012 campaign.
The now 7-year-old gelding had already earned one championship title—2011 Champion Aged Gelding—and he was on track to be a serious contender for another in 2012 if he could finish the year strong.
He did just that.
Rylees Boy started his season at Sunland Park, finishing second in the KOFX-FM Stakes-G3 and then winning a trial and
the final of the Bank Of America Sunland Championship Challenge-G2. He made one start at Remington Park, finishing sixth in the Remington Park Invitational Championship-G1, before moving to Jones’ barn at Los Alamitos.
Rylees Boy’s first start for Jones was a throwaway race, as the gelding was bumped repeatedly and forced to check in the Go Man Go Handicap-G1, finishing last. Counting on the veteran runner to rebound, Jones hauled him to Prairie Meadows in Iowa for the AQHA Challenge Championships, where Rylees Boy won the Grade 1 Bank Of America Challenge Championship. That win gave Rylees Boy a berth to the Champion Of Champions-G1, fulfilling owner Lorena Valezquez Rodriguez’s dream of running in that race, and taking it one step further with a late-charging victory in the older horse classic.
“Rylees Boy has been a big thrill to have
in the barn. He’s the first horse at age 7 to win the Champion Of Champions. He’s just
a great horse,” said Paul Jones. “Our goal will be to try to get him back in the Champion Of Champions again for 2013. It’s amazing that a horse his age can keep doing what he’s doing. It’s really a pleasure as a trainer to have this kind of horse in my barn.”
Rylees Boy and Ramon Sanchez are up late to win the $750,000 Grade 1 Champion of Champions.
