It can be tough for a 3-year-old filly to hold her own against the boys. It can be even tougher for a 3-year-old filly to be competitive against older mares. And it’s rare that a 3-year-old filly
can match strides with older horses. Flame N Flash did it all.
Owned by Robert Williams, Flame N Flash started her year with a strong fourth- place finish in Kobe’s Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1. Runner-up Deniro went on to
win the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1, while show finisher Check My Thoughts became the meet’s only two-time derby winner. Facing her own age and sex in her next two races, Flame N Flash won a trial to the La Primera Del Ano Derby-G3 and then the $210,014 final.
Rather than staying in the derby ranks, Flame N Flash faced older mares in the Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1, going wire to wire to win by a half-length. Among the horses she beat that night were eventual Champion Aged Mare Fredaville, graded stakes winner Thisfeatureisspecial, and 2010 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Flying Fig. The win earned Flame N Flash a berth in the Champion Of Champions-G1, where she would again have to face older horses.
Before that December classic, however, Flame N Flash dropped back into the derby ranks, winning a trial to the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1. She lost all chance in the final when she was pinballed at the start, finishing sixth.
Accepting the challenge of competing in the Champion Of Champions, Flame N Flash was overlooked at odds of 26-1 in the field that included Champions Rylees Boy, Jess You And I and Cold Cash 123. But in the end, Flame
N Flash ran a stunning race to nearly defeat Rylees Boy, finishing second by just a head.
“It’s very tough to lose in the final strides,” said trainer Elena Andrade, who got Flame N Flash just a month before the Champion Of Champions. “It’s a heartbreaker, but how can I be disappointed with the way things have gone with her? It was a great opportunity to train a great filly. I am so happy that we were the ones that had the chance to do it.”
Flame N Flash defeats older mares in the $150,000 Grade 1 Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap.
