Propect To The Top did double duty in 2012, standing his first season at stud at JEH Stallion Station Texas Division before
returning to the racetrack in August. From his first start back—a runner-up finish in the Mr Jet Moore Handicap-G3 at Ruidoso Downs— Propect To The Top proved a season at stud had not slowed him down one bit.
Owned by Joel Tavarez, who had paid the paltry sum of $4,000 for Propect To The Top and his dam several years ago, Prospect To The Top wasted no time returning to the winner’s circle. In his second start of 2012, the stallion won the All American Gold Cup-G3, defeating multiple champion Noconi.
With the Ruidoso meet over, Prospect To The Top journeyed to Texas for the Refrigerator Handicap-G1. He finished off the board for the first and only time in 2012 in that race, crossing the wire sixth in an uncharacteristic effort that was attributed to nighttime racing under the lights.
His next start was in the Zia Park Championship-G1, where he faced a field that included champions Llano Teller and Feature Mr Bojangles. In a dominating effort, Prospect To The Top led the field from wire to wire, trouncing his competition with a 1 3/4-length win under jockey Oscar Rincon.
With the year coming to an end, Prospect To The Top had one more race on his dance card—the Championship at Sunland Park-G1. Once again, Prospect To The Top proved much the best, as Rincon never went to the stick while hand riding the stallion to a half- length win in the $350,000 stakes.
“He has a big heart,” says Tavarez, who works for an insulation company in Odessa, Texas. “And he’s real, real sound.”
Prospect To The Top goes to his second season at stud with a championship title to
his credit, as well as career earnings approach- ing one million dollars. He could surpass that mark with a return to the races in 2013, which is definitely something his connections are tak- ing into consideration for their newest star.
Prospect To The Top makes a wire-to-wire run winning the $150,000 Zia Park Championship by 1 3/4-lengths.
