When asked when she began planning
All About Larry’s campaign for the title of Champion Distance Horse, owner Diane Heath said, “From the first time he ran 870 yards.” Small wonder, as that first race around the hook—on Dec. 30., 2011, at Turf Paradise—resulted in a 2 3/4-length win in a track record time of :44.304.
While that 2011 win didn’t count toward All About Larry’s 2012 championship season, his next eight starts did. Six of them he won, four of them were stakes. He won at six dif- ferent tracks—Turf Paradise, Sunland Park, SunRay Park, Ruidoso Downs, Lone Star Park, and Prairie Meadows. And he won easy.
In his first 2012 appearance, and his second route event, All About Larry romped home eight lengths in front in a 1,000-yard race at Turf Paradise, just missing setting a second track record at the Arizona facility.
From there he moved to Sunland Park, where he won a trial to the Red Cell Sunland Distance Challenge by two lengths. The final of that race was his only off-the-board finish of the year, as he sprinted to the front before weakening along the rail to run fifth. All About Larry rebounded in the SunRay Park Marathon, leading from wire to wire to win by 3 1/4 lengths.
By June the gelding made his way to Ruidoso Downs, where he was forced to race six wide in the Tricky Dust Handicap. His third-place finish was advanced to second upon disqualification of the runner-up.
All About Larry made his last three starts of the year his best ones, winning by 8 3/4 lengths in the Master Salls Handicap, nine lengths in the Red Cell Lone Star Distance Challenge, and 5 1/4 lengths in the Red Cell Distance Championship Challenge-G1. In the latter, he set another track record, this time going 870 yards in :44.581 at Prairie Meadows.
All About Larry will now try to duplicate De Passem Okey’s distance championship double of 2010-2011. With such a strong start in 2012, the routers of 2013 had better watch out.
All About Larry goes wire-to-wire winning the Marathon Handicap by 3 1/4-lengths at SunRay Park.
