Bob Gentry wasn’t alive to see his latest champion crowned, but he was well repre- sented by his son, Kirk Gentry, and in spirit,
as Fredaville represents several generations of the legendary horseman’s breeding program. Gentry passed away on Jan. 7, 2013, just nine days before Fredaville was announced as the AQHA’s 2012 Champion Aged Mare.
To be exact, Fredaville represents four generations of Gentry breeding—Robert
and his brother, Bruce, bought the mare’s fourth dam, Cute Kiss, back in 1971. Cute Kiss produced Easy Kiss, the dam of Such
An Easy Effort, a Grade 1 winner and track record setter who earned nearly a half-million dollars on the racetrack. Such An Easy Effort produced Champion Deelish, who produced two generations of stakes winners, and Fearless Freda, the dam of Champions Fredricksburg and Fredaville.
Gentry Bros. raised horses for more than 30 years and are one of the sport’s all-time leading breeders with their horses earning more than $5.6 million. Bob was a 40-year breeder in his own name, breeding horses that won 183 of 1,232 starts with earnings of more than $3.2 million. He raced 114 winners from 642 starters, with earnings of more than $2.6 million.
Fredaville represented her family well in 2012, winning stakes races in Oklahoma, California and Iowa while also garnering a stakes-placing in Florida. The well-traveled mare won two qualifying races for the Merial Distaff Challenge Championship, and also won the Grade 1 final.
“She ran a really good race tonight,” said jockey G.R. Carter after that race. “We liked the post and she had a really big finish. This mare has the heart of a champion. I hope this win is enough to lock up champion older mare honors.”
It was and Fredaville did, continuing a legacy that will be a part of Quarter Horse rac- ing for years to come.
Fredaville rallies to take the Merial Distaff Challenge Championship at Prairie Meadows.
