race just as effectively, winning by 2-lengths, also with Ramirez in the irons. Dark NME qualified the third fastest.
“I’ve been on her back for about a month now,” said Ramirez. “Believe it or not, she was pretty green in that trial, and I thought she was better than she showed. I had to ask her to run in that one.”
Dark NME has attracted attention before. She went through the 2022 Heritage Place Yearling Sale under the name of Ms Dillard and sold for $65,000 to Romeo Mireles as agent. Jordan Wiggins consigned the filly to the sale for breeder L. Hendrix Horses LLC.
Dark NME is a daughter of Hes Relentless, Champion 3-Year-Old Colt of 2014. Hes Relentless did most of his running in New Mexico, where he won the Hobbs America Derby-G3. But he broke his maiden at Remington Park and ran second there in the 2013 Heritage Place Futurity-G1.
L. Hendrix Horses bred Dark NME in Oklahoma from winner Quions. The mare has produced two winners in three starters, including 2019 Black Gold 350 Championship Futurity winner Mr Dillard.
Quions is a full sister to Speedhorse Futurity-G2 winner Spit Like Jagger and a half-sister to stakes winners CR Tuckernuck and Fast Prize Tacita. The family traces back to First Prize Dash, Dark NME’s fourth dam and a Broodmare of the Year and an AQHA Dam of Distinction.
Mark and Annette McCloy’s homebred Especially Goodcandy (Jess Good Candy- Especially Tres) finished second. Ricky Ramirez rode the filly for trainer Trey Wood. Second in her trial, Especially Goodcandy was the 10th-fastest qualifier.
Jockey Edwin Escobedo rode Hamlyn (Hes Relentless-Itea) to third for trainer Jason Olmstead and owner Tom Maher. Hamlyn won his trial and was the fourth-fastest quali- fier to this Futurity.
JT Im That Boy (TF Im That Guy-Sweet Chico) and Countess Tres Seis (Tres Seis- Check Out This Queen) finished fourth and fifth. Acapulco Bay (Apollitical Jess-Aqua Girl) and Ace Hygh (Coronado Cartel-Political Nonsense) finished in a dead-heated for sixth. They were followed by MH Tres Bird (Tres Seis-Painted Laico Bird). JB Kool Jess and AS Moonflash, who qualified first and second fastest, respectively, were both scratched from the race.
Francisco Ramirez Jr. and Dark NME return to the winner’s circle.
