Hooked N Gone is joined in the winner’s circle by owner/breeder Regina Laymon, trainer Victor Ibarra and jockey Cristian Esqueda.
at Ruidoso Downs, and he was fourth in the Heritage Place Futurity-G1.
Hooked N Gone had finished fourth in his April 8 Remington Park Derby trial after being sandwiched in at the start of the race. The race was his first outing of the year and his first start for Ibarra.
“He was coming off a layoff and had been sick,” the trainer explained. “It was his first race of the year, so you can forgive that.”
Laymon bred Hooked N Gone in Oklahoma from stakes winner Pretty Girl Kate. Pretty Girl Kate won the 2007 Kansas Bred Derby, was second in the Miss Blackhawk Stakes, third in the Kansas Jackpot Prep Futuity and she was a finalist in the Kansas Derby-G3 and Central Juvenile Challenge. Pretty Girl Kate has produced 11 starters, all winners, including stakes winners I Cant Help It and Hooked On A Win plus stakes-placed Kates Carter and Kates Wagon.
Defours (Hes Relentless-Carters Signature), ridden by Sergio Becerra Jr., trained by John Stinebaugh, and owned by Zack Stinebaugh and LC3 Cattle Co., finished second. Previously, the gelding was an allowance win- ner at Will Rogers Downs.
Aristides (Apollitical Jess-First To Celebrate)—also the name of the very first Kentucky Derby winner in 1875—finished third. Oscar Andrade Jr. rode the sorrel gelding for trainer Trey Wood and owners Gene and Tod Bradley. Aristides ran second in the 2022 Ruidoso Juvenile.
