The Marathon Handicap
MT VEEDER TB
by Tracy Gantz
Bill and Susan Tomasic purchased the Thoroughbred Mt Veeder for $17,000 out of the 2016 Keeneland Fall Mixed Sale. They parlayed
their buy several stakes victories, most recently in the $24,250 Marathon Stakes at SunRay Park on May 4. Five Quarter Horses and two Thoroughbreds
lined up for the 870-yard Marathon. Mt Veeder got away last and raced 8-wide around the turn. He made up enough ground, however, to win by 1 1/2-lengths as the 3-10 favorite.
Mt Veeder originally sold for $200,000 at the 2014 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Alfredo Juarez Jr. rode the 5-year-old gelding for trainer Justin Evans in the Marathon.
Mt Veeder captured the 2015 Contender Stakes at Los Alamitos and also won the 2017 Zia Park Sprint Stakes and KLAQ Handicap at Sunland Park, where he set a New Track Record for 5 furlongs. Most recently, the gelding won the Bill Thomas Memorial Stakes at Sunland Park in March. His record is now 18-9(5)-2(1)-4(2) with $312,382.
Hans Poetsch bred Mt Veeder out of mul- tiple winner Glenbriar Girl. She has produced
six winners from as many starters. Mt Veeder is a half-brother to stakes-placed A J’s Mountain, and his second dam, Spa Warning, also produced mil- lionaire Two Item Limit.
Funny Munny (Munnings TB-Fodice) ran second under jockey Alejandro Medellin for owner Leann Archuleta and trainer Adam Archuleta.
Richard Sedillo trains third-placed finisher First Place TB (First Samurai-Right Place) and co-owns him with Phyllis Wolfe. Frank Reyes was up.
Cool Cash 123 (Oak Tree Special-Hot Cash 123), DM Nate Dog (Gonna Ro Sham Bo-Kat Kora), Fire Thorn (Shazoom-Reba Macintyler) and Linda Tee Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Jess Linda Tee) completed the order of finish.
