MAJOR BITES

Major Bites flew to his third stakes victory in the $85,000 Mesilla Valley Handicap-RG3 at Sunland Park on March 3.
The 5-year-old bay gelding broke in second under jockey Jose Alvarez and quickly grabbed the lead, flying to the wire to win by 1/2-length. The team completed the 350 yards in :17.112 for a 102 speed index and his second stakes win of the season for owner Israel Bordier and trainer Jesus Carrete.
Major Bites was shortening in distance off his 2 1/4-length win in the 440-yard $85,000 Dona Ana County Stakes on Jan. 28, a race in which he recorded a lifetime-best 104 speed index.
Major Bites has won five of his eight outs at Sunland, and his record is now 22-7(3)-4(2)-3(1). The $51,000 winner’s share of the Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap purse pushed his bankroll to $348,712.
The gelding was bred by Carlos Paez out of 2-time winner Dyna Mo Rime. She has produced 100% money earners from five starters, including stakes placed Dyna O Mite. Major Bites is her first stakes winner and top money earner.
Hot Authorization (Corona Caliente-Authorized Love) ran second for owners Sergio Holguin, Cliften Nielsen and Felix Rodriguez. Raul Herrera rode the gelding for trainer Ricardo Armendariz. Comin To Your Town (Jesse James Jr-Btb Express) and Federico Martinez finished third for owners Vanessa Hinostroza and Rogelio Carrasco Jr. and trainer Gaston Valenzuela.

Rarin was true to his name and was rarin to go as he secured his first stakes victory in the $65,500 Mighty Deck Three Stakes-RG3 at Remington Park
on March 9.
Sent away the 2nd choice behind favored AJs High,
Rarin broke in 2nd from the 3 post under jockey Roberto Meraz Jr. and quickly took the lead in the 250-yard event. Rarin held off the favorite to win by a head in :12.912, earning a career high 106 speed index.
“He was a real professional today and was focused,” said Meraz. “He gave us a good effort and was on his game for sure.”
Rarin brought home the $36,900 winner’s
share of the purse for owner Jesus Estrada and
trainer Fernando Carrete, boosting his earnings to $134,260. His record is now 21-8(1)-3-1 and includes a 4th place finish in the 2017 Lovington Stakes-G2 and a 5th in that year’s Zia Park Championship-G1.
Kathleen Matey bred Rarin out of stakes winner Rare Kayoh. She has produced 100% money earners from five starters, including graded stakes winner and top money earner Pyro and stakes winner Max Cartel.
Michael Teel’s homebred AJs High (Apollitical Jess-Regally Rare) ran 2nd under jockey Stormy Smith. Charles Hunt trains the 6-year-old gelding, who has won 11 stakes and has earned $836,992. Jose Alvarez piloted Knockemout Capi (Capo De Capi-Eyesa Knockout) to 3rd for trainer Alfredo Gomez. Mayra Sanchez, Moises Esquirel, and Adrian Mireles own the 4-year-old colt. Jess Paint Your Lips notched her fourth career stakes win in the $50,495 Decketta Stakes-G3 held at Remington Park on March 31.
A five-year-old mare home-bred by Michael Pohl, Jess Paint Your Lips notched her eighth victory in 11 lifetime starts, a record that included a win in last year’s AQHA Distaff Challenge Championship-G1. The $29,730 Decketta payday improved her career bankroll to $158,280.
Breaking second from the 5-post, Jess Paint Your Lips quickly moved to the front, leading by a head at the first call. She stayed ahead at every remaining junc- ture, pulling away late to win by 3/4-lengths. Stacy Charette-Hill trains Jess Paint Your Lips, who covered the 350 yards in :17.014, posting a career-best 106 speed index. Jorge Torres drew the riding assignment.
Her other victories include the 2016 Prairie Meadows Derby Challenge and the 2017 Lone Star Distaff Challenge.
Pohl bred Jess Paint Your Lips out of multiple winner Paint Your Lips. She has produced 100% money earners from five starters. Jess Paint Your Lips is her first stakes winner. She also was 5th in this year’s Charger Bar Handicap-G1.
One Sweet Racy (One Sweet Jess-Miss Racy Vike) finished second for owner Johnny Trotter. The Trey Wood trainee had Ricky Ramirez aboard.
Under Tanner Thedford, Mojo Perry (Mr Jess Perry-Jump Down First) came in third for owner LMG Racing, Inc. and trainer John Cooper.
