ROCK A BILLY
by John Moorehouse
Rock A Billy scored his third stakes win with his Sept. 23 victory in the $31,950 Zoetis Will Rogers Downs Distance Challenge. The gelding
had no equal in this race, opening a commanding 2-length lead by the time he reached the stretch and coasting to a 1 1/2-length victory. Rock A Billy made the 870-yard trip in :45.526 for a 101 speed index. The victory produced a $15,656 payday, improving the 5-year-old gelding’s earnings to $123,761. He now holds a record of 33-7(3)-4(1)-4.
Home-bred by Rockin J Running Horses, Rock A Billy has also earned a berth in the AQHA Distance Challenge Championship-G1, a race with an $100,000 estimated purse scheduled as part of Bank of America Challenge Championships Night on Nov. 17 at Los Alamitos. Rock A Billy also par- ticipated in that event last year, finishing sixth.
Tammy Johnson trains Rock A Billy, who had Paul Nieto in the irons. The combination of owner and trainer also pooled their efforts behind Viva Le Don, who won the Black Gold 350 Championship Futurity, also held as part of this card.
Rock A Billy is one of two stakes winners out of his dam, Imaginiff, a deceased 2004 mare who produced three starters.
Johnson trains each of the horses who hit the board in this race. Runner-up Madewell (Jess Jones- Streakin Peacock) is owned by Ray & Davy Madewell and had Andrew Samaniego up. Jess A Hilbily Bone (Rock Solid Jess-Imaginiff), a full-brother to Rock A Billy and a 4-time stakes winner, was 3rd for owner Rockin J Running Horses and rider Randy Wilson. Followed by SRD Red Bobcat (Red Storm Cat- Shouldabeenjoebob TB), FDS Of Seattle (First Down Straw-Talk Of Seattle TB), Coronas Can Man (Pete’s Wonder TB-Cruzn On Coronas) & Winner Whisper (Cat Whisper-Winners Gray Company). Let There Be Sound was scratched.
Miss Ellen Stakes
TRACE DYNASTY
by John Moorehouse
After falling just short and running second in the Heritage Place Futurity-G1 last year, Trace Dynasty picked up the first stakes win of her career prevailing in the $20,200 Miss Ellen Stakes at Will Rogers Downs on Sept. 9.
It was a fine bounce-back effort for the three- year-old filly, who most recently finished fourth in her Aug. 19 trial for the All American Derby. She reached the winner’s circle for the third time in 11 lifetime starts in this race, and the $11,850 payday pushed her cumulative earnings to $237,248 for owner/breeder Kathleen O. Matey.
The filly made a clean break from the inside starting gate, making her way into the lead by a head as she entered the stretch, then pulling away to beat Eye Eye Captain to the finish line by 1/2-length. Renee Wilson trains Trace Dynasty, who was ridden by Omar Reyes.
Matey bred Trace Dynasty out of New Track Record setter Wowzer Won, who won 5 stakes races such as the Sam Houston Distaff Challenge-G3 and the Live Oak Handicap. She has produced 100% winners from four starters. Trace Dynasty is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Eye Eye Captain (Captain Courage-Eye My Alexis) and Rolando Raudales were second for owner David Clonts and trainer Guillermo Valdivia. Express Train No 9 (Freighttrain B-Wildfire Express Two) finished third under Cody Smith for owner Jessica Perez and trainer Cosme Velasquez.
JC Wild Rose (Apollitical Jess-Oh Cherokee Rose), Hardtoget (Foose-Tinys Corona Queen), Feature Me Gorgeous (Giorgino-Rebas Feature), Double Eagle (One Dashing Eagle-A Southern
Gal), SR Fly Baby (FDD Dynasty-Once Upon A Fly), Jessie Marie (Spit Curl Jess-Traffic Wagon)
and Lil Bit Corona (Cartel Success-Little But Fast) completed the order of finish.
Cricket Bar Appaloosa Futurity
LOTA WHITE SOX
by John Moorehouse
Lota White Sox scored his first stakes win in the $26,812 Cricket Bar Appaloosa Futurity at Will Rogers Downs on Sept. 15.
Home-bred by E. Bruce Miller, Lota White Sox now holds two wins in four career starts since mak- ing his competitive debut on May 6 in a maiden at Remington Park.
Coming off a layoff of nearly two months, Lota White Sox showed zero rust.
Coming out of the inside starting gate, the geld- ing made a clean break and was in third position early. He was part of a three-way battle for the lead going into the stretch, still following in third place. Lota White Sox had a strong kick and he chased down his two rivals and got to the wire first by a nose at the front of a blanket finish.
Matthew McCart is the conditioner for Lota White Sox, who completed the 400-yard stakes win- ning trip in :20.034 for an 86 speed index.
Jockey Paul Nieto was in the irons as Lota White Sox brought home an $8,881 payday. The winner’s share boosted the gelding’s cumulative earnings to a new total of $14,271.
This marked the second straight victory for Lota White Sox, who broke his maiden on July 22 at Fair Meadows in Tulsa.
His race record now stands at 2(1)-1-0 from four career starts.
E. Bruce Miller bred Lota White Sox out of two- time winner Dashing Susie. She has produced 100% winners from two starters, including 2-time winner Lota Black Beauty. Lota White Sox is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Teejus Livin (Cartel Success QH-Boppin Js Fastball) raced in contention throughout and just missed, finishing second a nose behind Lota White Sox and a neck in front of the third place finisher. Jockey Roberto Meraz Jr. was aboard for the ride for owner Joy Holder-Smith and conditioner Carlos Ruiz.
Admiral Tom (Red Storm Cat QH-Eyesa Knockout) and jockey Eugenio Navarrete Jr. dueled with the leaders but was outnodded and finished in third position for owner Gary Vaughan and trainer Luis Villafranco.
Chasing Utah (First Prize Stone QH-Good As Gone), Dilly Dally Dash (Easy Doux QH-Dashing Cleta), Indestructibull (Agouti QH-Omega Bull) and Howdys Express (SR Boy Howdy-Geneos Darling) completed the order of finish. Flash Of Generous scratched.
