RAKIN IN JO
by John Moorehouse
Nearly one year to the day after scoring her first stakes victory, Rakin In Jo returned to Prairie Meadows to score a dominant win in the $65,624
Iowa Stallion Derby on Sept. 2.
Under Cody Smith, Rakin In Jo broke on top
from the inside gate, led by 1-length at the first call, doubled that advantage going into the stretch and coasted to win by that same margin.
The filly completed the 400-yard event in wire- to-wire fashion in :19.885, earning a career-best 90 speed index. The $29,531 winner’s share of the purse pushed Rakin In Jo’s lifetime bankroll to $79,253. Lisa Baumeister owns her and Wayne Garner does the conditioning.
The filly entered the finals as the fastest qualifier after an impressive 3 1/2-length win in the Aug. 19 trials. She earned black type on Sept. 2 of last year when she won the Iowa Stallion Futurity.
Garner bred Rakin In Jo out of placed Chargin To The Lead. The mare has produced 100% winners from three starters, including Bettor Times, who was third in the 2014 Jim Bader Futurity. Rakin In Jo is her first stakes winner and top earner.
