AMCCCCM Classic
WAGON WILL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The second race of the three that make
up the Mexican Quarter Horse Triple Crown was held on May 15. The first race, the Easily a Possum Classic, was not held due to lack of the minimum number of horses needed to compete.
This classic in honor of the Mexican Association of Breeders and Horsemen of Quarter Horses (AMCCCCM) was held among seven three-year-old specimens, five
of them bred in the United States and two in Mexico, to compete for a purse of $307,900 pesos ($15,076 U.S. approx.) over a distance of 400 yards.
All entries were placed and/or finalists in stakes events except Wagon Will (#6), the eventual winner of the contest who only had one previous start. On this occasion, he had no rival that forced him to fully express his potential, especially in the last 100 yards as he dominated Hiclass And Grand (#1), who
very close to the inner rail seemed willing to give the fight. Wagon Will crossed
the finish line 2-lengths in front, well managed by jockey Martín Utrera Morales.
At the wire, the clock
marked :19.24 for a 99 speed
index and Wagon Will
remains undefeated in his
second outing. His debut was
March 13, 2022, winning his maiden at 330 yards, guided by the same rider Martín Utrera. Now, his financial reward was $153,950 pesos ($7,538 U.S. approx.).
Wagon Will was bred in the United States by Randy and Sandy Coleman and is the son of PYC Paint Your Wagon and out of the mare MS Athenas Dividend, by Brimmerton. He
is the property of Cuadra Los Gavilanes and
is trained by Rubén Romo Hernández, who
scored his fifth victory of the day, including also the Revelation Classic with Stay And Play NR.
In second place was Hiclass And Grand (FDD Going Grand-Hiclass Little Lily) with Alejandro Gómez in the irons for owner Cuadra Jojola R and trainer Joaquín Ramón Peláez.
The third place went to DBL Prize (Fast Prize Cartel-Eyesontheprice), a filly owned by Cuadra H–R and saddled by trainer Ismael Ayala Salas.
Island Candy (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Eye On This Candy), Player X Three (Mr Jess Perry-Mischievous Player), Divas First Jet (Divas First Down-Eyes Tricky Too) and Ilusion Impala (Streakin Sixes-Lawanda Fay) completed the order of finish.
