Tom Kenway goes back a long
way with the pedigree of Double Cruise, winner of the $40,711 Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity on July 11. He bred Double Cruise’s first two dams and owned and trained the colt’s sire, BD Cruiser, at the end of his racing career.
Kenway bred, owns, and trains Double Cruise, unveiling him in the June 27 trials to the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity.
In those trials, Double Cruise broke well but was crowded as he continued to gain ground. He closed with plenty of energy, fin- ishing second to fastest-qualifier Suits. Jockey Neville Stephenson rode Double Cruise in both the trials and finals.
In the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity finals, Stephenson and Double Cruise broke fifth from the eight gate. They drifted inward a bit, but passed horses in a driving finish. They were still in fifth at
the top of the stretch, but powered through to win by a head.
Double Cruise completed the 300 yards in :15.874 for an 89 speed index.
The brown gelding is now a stakes winner in just his second start. The $40,711 payday from the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity takes his bank account to $42,271.
Kenway bred Double Cruise in Alberta, Canada, from homebred Eye Cruise, who finished third in the 2008 Manitoba Speed Horse Futurity. Kenway trained Eye Cruise for owner Kurtis Kenway. Eye Cruise has produced three start- ers, all winners, including First Prize Cruise, third in the 2018 Canada Quarter Horse Cup Derby and Alberta Bred Derby, and Fly Bye Cruise, third in the 2017 Evergreen Park Distance Challenge.
Dwight Lewis piloted Timbergold (First Timber-Gilded Gold) to second for owners Joe Halerewich, Jack McCurdy, and
Greg Campkin and trainer Wesley Oulton. Timbergold raced three times at Remington Park before fin- ishing second in his Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity trial.
Oulton bred, owns and trains fastest qualifier Suits (First Timber- Burners Beauty), who was third in the finals. Adrian Gonzalez rode the gelding.
Completing the field were Separate Xpress (Mezoomn-Quota), JB Hooter (JB Runaway Fame-Justahoot TB), JB First Down Fame (First Down Leaving-Exotic Fame), Quarter Sawn (First Timber-Starlite Delight), Sasses Loki (First Timber-Sass N Dass) and Allthespeedyouneed (Its All About Speed-Wave Rocker). Rolling Timber was scratched.
