Papas Coleen did much better in Century Downs’ Alberta Bred stakes this year. In 2018, she had
clipped heels and lost her jockey in the Alberta Bred Futurity trials. But she made up for that this year with a vic- tory in the Sept. 15 Alberta Bred Derby.
With Ceasar Cervantes aboard in the 400-yard Derby, Papas Coleen broke in second and quickly took the lead. She scored by 3/4-length, getting the distance in :20.136. The $10,276 winner’s share boosted her total lifetime earnings to $30,428.
Darcy Hawkes trains Papas Coleen for owner/breeder Donalda Cochrane. It was the filly’s first stakes win, though she finished second in this
year’s Evergreen Park Derby Challenge and third in last year’s Canada Quarter Horse Cup Futurity-G3.
Cochrane bred Papas Coleen out of stakes-placed Cash In This Lane. The mare has produced five winners in 10 starters, including stakes winners Pow Wow Lane, Feelin The Fever, Exciting The Planet, and Wyatt Steel.
Ricardo Moreno rode JB Easy First Down (First Down Leaving- Tisa Easy Effort) to second for owner Alison Christie and trainer William Leech. JB Easy First Down earlier ran second in this year’s Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby.
Ken McFarlane bred and trains third-place Last Unicorn
(Unification TB-Teller Reba), and he owns the gelding with Pat Debona. Adrian Gonzalez rode Last Unicorn, who won two races in 2018.
Completing the field were Timbersknightryder (First Timber- Sparkling Hy), Eye N Mighty (Mighty B Valiant-Eyesa Screamer), JB Runaway Special (JB Runaway Fame-Ms Oakie Is Special), Phenomabomb (First Timber- Keep On Keepin On), Poutn And Zoomin (Mezoomn-Poutnlori), Sasses Quick Silver (First Timber- Sass N Dass), Goldin Warrior (First Timber-Madam Goldilocks) and Royale Special (Special Fly Bye- Shawnee Royale).
