Adequan AJX Derby Challenge
LS PRINCE
By Michael Compton
The Ajax Downs Derby on Aug. 13 belonged to owner Milena Kwiecien and trainer Jason Pascoe in more ways than one. Not only did the owner/ trainer combination send out LS Prince, the winner of the 400-yard race, but the combo was also repre- sented by the second and third place finishers in the $23,999 event.
Ridden by Josh Scott, LS Prince broke even from the 7-gate and jumped to second place by the first call. LS Prince dueled with Denali Teller and took the lead in a driving finish, winning by a nose.
Winning his third consecutive outing, LS Prince recorded the initial stakes win of his career in the race. LS Prince stopped the timer in a fast :19.910, and both the top two finishers earned a speed index of 102. The win improved his record to 7-4(1)-0-0 and increased his bankroll to $19,879.
The two rivals, who raced as a separate entry despite having the same owner and trainer, turned the contest into a match race through the lane, racing stride for stride to the finish with LS Prince prevailing over Denali Teller Off (Louisiana Senator-Eye Like Beduino) who was ridden by Tony Philips.
Bred in Texas by Paris Wixon, LS Prince is out of the unraced Sixarun mare Princess Sixarun, who is also the dam of graded stakes-placed Zoomalicious.
Maryland Magic (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Purley Un Social), also owned by Kwiecien and trained by Pascore, finished third under Ramiro Castillo.
Hickerson (Country Chicks Man-Easily Holland), Mrs First Lady (Mr Jess Perry-First Lady Amber), Coronas Chrome (Tac It Like A Man-Charmin Chief Corona), Kona Corona (Wave Carver-Bellas A Lady), Jewel Of An Episode (Pappasito-Eye Of An Episode) and Peves Freddy B (Streak And Dash-Ima Lazie Too) completed the order of finish. One Dashin Rose was scratched.
Brigand Stakes
EBW CATALYST
by Michael Cusortelli
Ernie and Brenda Wood’s EBW Catalyst unleashed a strong rally in the final yards to win the $20,000 Brigand Stakes at Ruidoso Downs on Aug. 12.
Prepped by Chris Zamora and ridden by Larry Gamez, EBW Catalyst broke fourth from the 9-gate and rallied to finish 3/4-length in front. EBW Catalyst covered 550 yards in :27.184 under Larry Gamez and earned a 94 speed index for his first stakes win.
The $12,000 winner’s share of the Brigand Stakes purse pushed the gelding’s earnings to $62,040. He was also a finalist in the 2015 Hobbs America Futurity-G2 at Zia Park. EBW Catalyst has won four of his 17 starts, including all three of his outs at the 550 distance.
The 4 year old was bred by the Woods, and he is one of two starters produced by graded stakes winner EBW Obsession. She won two stakes from 2009-11, including the 2009 AQHA New Mexico Juvenile Challenge-G3 at Ruidoso. EBW Catalyst’s second dam, Runaway Sweetheart, won the 1995 Trinity Meadows Futurity-G3 in Texas.
Llano Senator (Louisiana Senator-Eyesa Lil Cuervo) finished second for owner Wootan Racing. Sergio Becerra rode the homebred 4-year-old gelding for trainer Gerald Reed.
Don Quixote (Stel Corona-Romanticist) placed third following the disqualification of Southern Temptation. Esgar Ramirez rode the 6-year-old geld- ing for owner/trainer Everardo Hernandez.
Mahoney N Tacklebery (Favorite Cartel- Fountain Bleu) finished fourth and was followed by Torts On Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Queen Of Torts), Rock Princess (Rock Solid Jess-A Classic Serenade), Flyin Hi Class (Hiclass La Jolla-Fabulous First), Bazoooka (Bodacious Dash-Three City Sisters), CJS Rocksolid (Rock Solid Jess-Sultry Miss) and Southern Temptation (Tempting Dash-Passem

D RAILED
by John Moorehouse
DRailed picked a fine time to break his maiden. The Appaloosa gelding scored his first-ever trip to the winner’s circle in his debut in stakes competi-
tion, making a driving finish to take the $19,750 Colors of the Alamo Paint and Appaloosa Futurity at Retama Park on Aug. 5.
Trained by Javier Contreras, D Railed broke well from the 5-gate and was running a competitive third both at the first call and as he went into the stretch. Jockey Jose Vega urged D Railed into a big move during the final yards as he surged to the front of the pack, making it to the finish line first by a head.
D Railed completed the 350 yards in :18.035, posting a career best 90 speed index and bringing home an $11,258 payday that boosted his lifetime earnings to $19,542 for owner/breeder Jeff Adams. D Railed made his competitive debut on March 10 when he finished a close second in the trials to the Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity. He qualified to that race and was 5th in the $117,400 finals after a bobbled start.
Adams also home-bred his dam Jess Streakin ApHC. The 2004 stakes winning mare holds five triumphs in 18 total starts, with a total bankroll of more than $57,000.
DTL Samureye APHA (Royal Quick Flash QH-Eysa Savvy Queen) finished 2nd under Damian Martinez for owner Almada Racing & trainer Josue Ponce. Apollos Second Sign ApHC (Second Painted Sign QH-Allies Apollo) was 3rd for owner/trainer Michael Moss under James Flores. Followed by Once A Warrior ApHC (Agouti QH-Omega Bull), First Down Geno ApHC (First Smart Money QH-Frosty Rose JJ), DJ Pauly D APHA (Royal Quick Flash QH-Corona Lace), Hurricane O J APHA (Awesome Chrome-OJ Okey), Insurmountable Grace ApHC (DMNV Mountable QH-S R Itsinmywill) and The Gun Hand APHA (Easy Jet Too-Defined Borders).
