Louisiana Purchase Stakes
LIGHTEMUPWITHCHARM
by Michael Compton
Lightemupwithcharm stepped up and earned
his first stakes win, defeating nine rivals in the $40,000 Louisiana Purchase Stakes at Delta Downs
on April 21 for 3 year olds and up who had never won a stakes event.
Ridden by Antonio Alberto, Lightemupwithcharm broke well from the 7-gate and dueled with Punctuality for the early lead. After taking command in the stretch, the 4-year-old geld- ing withstood a late bid from race favorite BJS Magic Wings and pulled clear late to defeat the gelding
by 1/2-length at the finish. Lightemupwithcharm stopped the timer in :17.232 for 350 yards, earning a 103 speed index for trainer Willie Simien Jr.
It was the first start for Lightemupwithcharm since finishing third in last year’s LQHBA Breeders Derby at Evangeline Downs. The stakes win improved his overall record to 15-5(1)-2-2(1) and boosted his bankroll to $122,820 for owner Saul Dorado.
Bred by Jumonville Farms, Lightemupwithcharm is the first stakes winner out of 3-time winner
Grace Filled Charm. She has also produced winners Mississippi Stud and Cartels Grace.
BJS Magic Wings (Dragon Wings-Magic Shine) finished second under Luciano Duenez for owner Lester Colomb Jr. and trainer Kenneth Weeks.
Punctuality (Jet Black Patriot-Kay P TB) held third with David Alvarez riding for owner Gerardo Morales and trainer Juan Carrillo Jr.
Bubba Mallard (Sir Runaway Dash-Miss Mallard), Royal Quick Patriot (Jet Black Patriot- Holy Buckets), Toasted Runaway (Sir Runaway Dash-Toast To Tolltac), Sizzlin On Da Bayou (Sizzlin Cartel-Eyejesslovelouisiana), Bankin On Bux (Zoomin For Bux-Shine On Morgan), JRS Natural Runaway (Sir Runaway Dash-BJS Cute N Natural) and Heza Truckin (Heza Fast Dash-Watch My Baby) completed the order of finish.
Delta Dash Stakes
DM LA JOLLA
Mby Michael Compton
aking his seasonal debut, DM La Jolla proved
best over seven rivals in the $23,850 Delta Dash Stakes at Delta Downs on April 20, earning his first ever black-type victory.
Ridden by Rolando Cabrera, DM La Jolla was fractious in the 3-gate, but broke alertly enough to race in third position early. He grabbed the lead in the stretch and despite drifting out, the 4-year-old gelding held on to prevail by a neck at the finish to score the 11-1 upset over race favorite MPS Shake Em N Style. He clocked the 250 yards in :13.067, earning a 96 speed index for trainer Porfirio Fierro.
The win improved DM La Jolla’s mark to 17-4(1)-5(1)-4(1) and increased his bankroll to $70,379 for owner Horses of Fire Inc. In addition
to this stakes score, DM La Jolla finished second in the 2017 B F Phillips Jr. Handicap-RG3 and third in that year’s Retama Park Derby.
Donna Mushinski bred DM La Jolla out of unraced DM Bella Mia. She has produced 100% money earners from four starters, including winners DM Just Jumpin and DM Hiclass. DM La Jolla is her first stakes winner and top money earner.
Everardo Rodriguez piloted the runner-up, MPS Shake Em N Style (Shake Em White-Style N Grace) for owner Rodolfo Amaro and trainer Robert Meche.
Heasablackmagic (Jet Black Patriot-Toast Of Magic) and jockey David Alvarez finished third for owner Yiret Duran and trainer Jian Carriollo Jr.

Dixie Downs Futurity
DUST A TAC
by John Moorehouse
The career of Dust A Tac is off to a great start. After topping the qualifying ladder for the Dixie Downs Futurity in the trials on April 7, the colt came back with a sprint to victory in the $35,907 stakes held at the Utah track on April 21.
Trained by Luis Gonzalez, Dust A Tac finished his 300-yard futurity trial in a field-best :16.030. He was even faster in his first stakes final, finishing in :15.889 for a career-high 87 speed index. Jesus Valenzuela rode Dust A Tac, who broke on top from the 6-post, led by a head going into the stretch and withstood Kis My Bit to hit the finish line first by a neck.
Abelardo Gonzalez owns Dust A Tac, who went for $6,500 at the Hertage Place Yearling Sale. The colt already has made good on that investment, bringing home a $14,363 prize for the futurity win. He has $14,663 in total earnings. Both his starts have been wire-to-wire victories.
County Line Runners bred Dust A Tac out of Deans Dusty Bunny, a very lightly-raced 2003 mare who made just one start for Sissie and Bob McClure. Her offspring have enjoyed more success. Dust A Tac becomes the second stakes winner from 10 starters, with stakes winner JB James.
Under jockey J. Torres, Kis My Bit (One Famous Eagle-Bits Of Bliss) ran second for owner Adrian Aleman and trainer Ricardo Castillo.
Sir Trump (Sir Seth-Wagon Cruzer), the second fastest qualifer, finished third for owner Rodney Christiansen and trainer Val Brinkerhoff. Alex Carrillo was in the irons.
Followed by Cir Kingzlees Queen (Mark My Dial- Cir Queen Of Style), Winners Blu Bayou (Winners Version-Bolexie Blue), Anas Hope (Coronado Cartel- Avery Hope), Senator Cash (Louisiana Senator-Ms Carter Cash), Prearranged Wedding (Corona Cartel- Dashingfordestiny) and Eyesa Rite (Favorite Cartel- Eyesa Unique).
