The photo on page 162 shows million-dollar breeder/owner Fredda Draper. Fredda and her husband, trainer Carl Draper, made their first trip to the All American winner’s circle in 2004 as co-owners, with Don Moler, and trainer of DM Shicago, who was that year’s Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding. Their next trip came when DM Shicago won the 2005 All American Derby. He also won the Ruidoso Derby as well as the Rainbow Derby in 2005. He was the 2005 World Champion, Champion 3 Year Old and Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding, and is only one of six horses to take the All American Futurity/ Derby double. Fredda’s next All American Futurity connection came as the breeder of Imperial Eagle, winner of the 2016 All American Futurity and the 2016 Champion 2 Year Old/ Champion 2-Year-Old Gelding. Fredda is also the breeder/owner of 2016 Speedhorse Co- Broodmare of the Year Jenuine Joy, the dam of Champion Imperial Eagle.
Carl and Fredda lived life on the rodeo circuit before turning to raising and training racehorses in the 1970’s. “We bought a little tiny farm and raised some colts,” she said in an interview with Speedhorse in 2016. “That was the year Carl trained in Juarez, Mexico. Then in 1979, we came to Ruidoso. There was so much difference between rodeo horses and racehorses it took us a good while to win a race.”
Carl, who passed away in 2015, is a Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame inductee and trained Champion PJ Chick In Black (bred by Fredda), as well as Ruidoso Downs Hall of Fame horse/4-time Champion Heartswideopen.
