Sweetwater Downs Derby

The Sweetwater Downs Derby at the Sweetwater County Fair in Wyoming on Sept. 1 brought together horses from Colorado, Idaho, and Utah, but the winner’s share of the purse went to Hatch A Plan, who had been competing in Florida and Oklahoma.
Fastest qualifier SH Cowboy Baby sported a four-race winning streak and went off as the 9-5 favorite. Hatch A Plan, second to the favorite in their trial, was sent off at more than 11-1. Kool Country led throughout the 400 yards to edge Hatch A Plan by a neck. However, Kool Country bothered fifth-place finisher Maniac Zac. The stewards disqualified Kool Country, elevating Hatch A Plan to first.
Edwin Pena rode Hatch A Plan for owner Santos Lopez and trainer Jorge Miranda. Ted Abrams bred Hatch A Plan and campaigned her until Francisco Gonzalez claimed her for $5,000 at Remington Park in March. Hatch A Plan finished second in the 2011 FQHRA Stallion Stakes Futurity.
The winning Thoroughbred mare Miss Hatch produced Hatch A Plan. Miss Hatch has produced only Quarter Horses, getting four winners from five starters, including stakes winner Lil Miss Hatch.
SH Cowboy Baby (Dashair-FLH Separation), ridden by Jordan Hadley, and Mr Fancy Delite (Mr Fancy Fame-Dash N Dixie Delite), piloted by Rene Lopez, were elevated to second and third, respectively, upon the disqualification. Susan Hadley trains SH Cowboy Baby and owns him with Diane Perkins. Ismael Salvidrez trains Mr Fancy Delite for owner Jose Alvarez.
Completing the field were Maniac Zac (Mighty Invictus-Cindy Strawford), Kool Country (First
N Kool-Fanci Country Cash), Moving Jesse (Jesse James Jr-Moto Move), Hezdashinginthedark (Darkelly-Sheza Dashing Angel), SW Count On Me (Count Corona-Raise A Rhoda), Bubba Ganush (Count Corona-Cheesepa-TB), and Shut Up N Deal (Brimmerton-Senas Real Deal).
wyoming Bred Futurity
LS LITTLe SAM
by Tracy Gantz
ATime To Wonder has proved a bonanza for Lynn Johnson in the Wyoming Bred Futurity. The mare is the first or second dam of all three of Johnson’s winners, the most recent being LS Little Sam, who won it at the Sweetwater County Fair on Sept. 2.
First came A Time To Wonder’s daughter A Special Wonder, who captured the 1993 Wyoming Bred Futurity at the Central Wyoming Fair in Casper when it wasn’t a recognized stakes. In 1999, Johnson won with Dashing Machine, who is out of a half-sister to A Special Wonder. That year, the race was held at Wyoming Downs in Evanston. LS Little Sam is a son of A Special Wonder.
Lynn and Elaine Johnson’s Shur-Bet Stables owns and bred A Special Wonder. Monty Arrossa trains the gelding, and Nikeela Black rode him to a second in the trial and in the final, where LS Little Sam completed the 350 yards in :17.903.
“It was a good race,” said Johnson. “He came from out of it and got up to win by a neck.”
LS Little Sam’s dam, A Special Wonder, won the 1993 QHBC Race Across America Futurity. She has produced six winners from eight starters, including stakes winner Cashin Sam and stakes-placed Nobles Special.
Gerald Heinrich and Marlene Young’s homebred Buckey On A High (Buccaneer Beach-Wabbit On
A High) finished second under Paul Greene. Ron Moosman trains the filly.
Pedro Martinez piloted Jess Baby May (Adashofjess-Fishers Rich Dancer) to third for trainer Jessie Villegas and owner-breeder Steve Day.
Completing the field were Austins Flyer (Eyesastrawfly-Heavens An Effort), Secret River Run (Dashin Moon Shadow-A Secret Life), Bullzeye (Latin Dancer-TB-Noble Nanny), and VVR Corona Up (Coronas Velvet-Streakin Serena). Nanelope, Peo Sisterchic, and Sweet American Honey were scratched.
Manuel Lujan Stakes
no orDInAry Love
by Tracy Gantz
Squeezed back in the Higheasterjet Handicap at Ruidoso Downs, No Ordinary Love never had a chance and finished seventh. The colt found a clearer path in the Sept. 3 Manuel Lujan Stakes, however, and was able to demonstrate his true ability.
With regular rider Macario Rodriguez aboard, No Ordinary Love quickly surged up from post eight to vie for the lead in the 350-yard Manuel Lujan. Several rivals challenged him to make it a cavalry charge at the wire, but No Ordinary Love held them all off to win by a head in :17.289 as the 2-1 favorite. Miguel Castillo trains No Ordinary Love for owner Allen Garcia Ruiz. Since Ruiz acquired the colt, he has performed consistently. Following a second and a win in allowance company at Sunland Park, No Ordinary Love captured the Animas Stakes at SunRay Park.
John Andreini and Zory Kuzyk bred No Ordinary Love out of Grade 1 winner Lady Tenaya. Lady Tenaya has produced 10 winners from 18 starters, including Hobbs America Derby-G2 winner Corona For The Lady and All American Juvenile Invitational-RG3 win- ner and sire Desirio. Winner Alethia, the second dam, is a full sister to Champion and Broodmare of the Year Florentine and Champion Calyx.
Cryin The Blues (Jess Louisiana Blue-In Between Dreams) finished second under Adrian Ramos. Arnoldo Carrillo trains the gelding for Santa Fe Horse Racing by Carrillo’s LLC.
David Barrett’s homebred gelding Mighty Famous Vic (Mighty Invictus-Fame Us Katie) ran third with Bonifacio Perez up for trainer Fred Danley.
Jumpn Gun (Jumpn-Molly’s Gun Moll-TB) and Fly Stolis Chick (Stoli-Fly Brazos Chick) dead- heated for fourth, and followed by Always Furst (Dream On Buster-Glow N Go Tell), Valient Prince (Valiant Hero-Royal Coins), A Fortunate Choice (A Regal Choice-Fortune Of Delight), and Simply Swift (Valiant Hero-Future Glass).
