Minnesota Futurity

The Minnesota Futurity at Canterbury Park often provides a glimpse into the following season’s 3-year-old stakes stars. This year’s winner, Fly Eyeann, is certainly in the right hands to follow through on the promise she flashed in winning the Sept. 2 renewal of the $23,350 event.
Fly Eyeann is trained by Ed Hardy, Canterbury’s all-time leading Quarter Horse Trainer. Hardy also saddled the winner of the Minnesota Derby, Western Fun, on the same day. It was the fifth time that Hardy had accomplished that feat. He has won the Canterbury training title 11 times in a stellar career.
Sent off as the race favorite, Fly Eyeann surged to a clear lead in mid-stretch and under a seemingly con- fident Tanner Riggs, hit the finish a measured head in front of fast-closing long shot Tres My Tracks (Tres Seis-Lenas Rare Lady). Fly Eyeann, a Rodney Von Ohlen homebred, covered the 350 yards in :18.607.
Eyzanee, the dam of Fly Eyeann, also was bred by Von Ohlen. She was graded stakes-placed dur- ing her racing career, finishing second in the 2001 Central Derby Challenge-G3 at Canterbury Park. In addition to Fly Eyeann, Eyzanee has also foaled stakes winner Call Me Mr Nibbs and stakes-placed Alphas Zoie and V Os Nicotine.
Runner-up Tres My Tracks, ridden by Larren Delome, is owned by Tom Pouliot and trained by Shane Miller. Finishing third was Von Ohlen’s second entrant in the race, V Os Red Hot Cole (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Miss Eyewear). Ridden by Nik Goodwin, V Os Red Hot Cole resides in the Hardy barn.
Completing the order of finish were First Down Marie (Sweet First Down-Alissanos), Ridiculicious (More Nachos-Cameo Di), Traffic Patrol (Quick Action-TB-Chic N Traffic), Streaking Light (Streakin La Jolla-CS Night Light), Carless Gun (Pistol Packin Perry-Careless With Cash) and Eyesa Knud Princess (Knud With Wings-Eyesa Covergirl).
Minnesota Derby

western Fun capped off a memorable Labor Day weekend for her breeders and owners, Robert and Julie Petersen, when she notched her first stakes victory in a roughly run $22,400 Minnesota Quarter Horse Derby during Festival of Champions Day at Canterbury Park on Sept. 2. The Petersens have now won the Derby four times. The couple was inducted into the Canterbury Park Hall of Fame during a ceremony the night before the Derby.
In front the entire 400 yards under Mark Luark and clear of the trouble behind her, Western Fun capitalized on a clean trip to win the Derby by a neck over Flyin Coronas, the erratic runner responsible for the adversity experienced by much of the field. Flyin Coronas was subsequently disqualified and placed last.
Western Fun, a winner in three of 15 starts, is trained by Ed Hardy, who also won the Minnesota Futurity with Fly Eyeann. Western Fun previously finished second in the 2011 Minnesota Futurity and third in the North Central QHRA Futurity before finishing second in this year’s Bob Morehouse Stakes.
Western Fun is the second stakes winner produced by Southern Fun. She is also the dam of stakes winner Holland North, and stakes-placed Northern Fun.
As a result of the disqualification, Streak N Hot (Hotdoggin-Streak N Sierra,) ridden by Doug Fink for owner and trainer Dale Haglund, was moved up to second from third and Beautys Prince (Afterallitsme-They Beauty), with Patrick Canchari in the irons for trainer Herman Fennell Jr, was moved from fourth to third to round out the top three placings. Beautys Prince races in the colors of Doug Hoseck.
Rounding out the order of finish behind the top three were BR Hotrod (Royal Evening Snow-Shuttle Lane-TB), Explosive Guns (Zoomin for Bux-Garters N Guns), and Quiet Groom (First Special Heart- Candy Cane Bar).

After reaching the winner’s circle just once in
his first 15 outs, Reggies Zoom has posted two consecutive victories—with the most recent in the $15,300 Elko County Fair Derby, held on Labor Day at the Elko County Fairgrounds.
Owned by Carolyn Aleman and Adrian Jose, Reggies Zoom now holds three wins in 17 lifetime starts. He’s been a consistent earner; the gelding has finished in the money 11 times, and this $6,120 payday improved his career bankroll to $25,436.
A finalist in last year’s Gillespie County Fair Futurity-G3, Reggies Zoom was sharp en route to his first-ever stakes win. The Rodney Hyde trainee broke from the four gate, quickly establishing himself as one of the front-runners in the 400-yard derby. Reggies Zoom brushed one of his foes in the stretch, but still got to the wire first by a nose, finish- ing in :20.044 under jockey Robert Burney.
The gelding is the third stakes winner produced by his dam, Dolls Black Type. Sixteen of her 19 foals have made starts, and nine hold wins. Her other stakes winners raced in the 1990s. Wendell Chandler bred both Reggies Zoom and his dam.
Jarrett Mills trains the two other horses that hit the board. Vicente Treyes owns runner-up Heza Beer Man (Corona For Me-Sheza Gator), who had Jess Chance in the irons. Third-place finisher Tac Da Chicks (Tac It Like A Man-Chicks On Fire) is owned by Rod and Linda Mills. Cody House was aboard.
Rounding out the field, Aguascalientes (Tres Seis-Marmalade Lady) was fourth, followed
by Valiant Diamond (Valiant Hero-Bring Me Diamonds), BH Best Of Fame (Dash Ta Fame-BH Wyoming Star), Royal Quick Lad (Royal Quick Dash-Shamless Lass), ENB Easy Drink (Stoli- Easy Walk), EMW Takittothelimit (Sigfried- Catcherfame) and Ckoutmyfirstfavorite (Fishers Dash-Lady Olaine).
