Preyn On the Mountain didn’t need any luck or help from above in the $106,500 AQHA Awards Recognition Concepts Distaff Challenge Championship-G1
at Albuquerque Downs on
Oct. 26, riding a clean trip to
the winner’s circle.
The 4-year-old daughter
of Ivory James broke sharply
under Jimmy Brooks and raced
in third position early in the 400-yard dash. She engaged
the leaders in the lane, grabbed
a narrow advantage approach-
ing the finish and surged clear
to win by 1/2-length at odds of
11-1. Racing for Eddie Willis,
the winner stopped the timer
in :19.626, earning a 91 speed index.
In winning the second stakes of her career, Preyn On the Mountain improved her record to 10-4(2)-4-0 and increased
her bankroll to $114,265 for owner Stetson Hurlbert. In her previous start, she captured
the ARC Will Rogers Downs Distaff Challenge at Will Rogers Downs.
Dr. Steve Hurlbert bred Preyn Onthe Mountain out of unraced
Prey. She has a produced three winners from four start- ers. Preyn Onthe Mountain is her first stakes winner.
Finishing second
was another longshot in Weetonas Lafawn (Valiant Hero-First Prize Fancy), piloted by Juan Pulido. Sent off at odds of 19-1, the 4-year-old filly races for Cavenaugh Quarter Horses and was trying to make it back-to-back stake
scores after winning the Prairie Meadows Distaff Challenge-G3. Trained by Clinton Crawford, Weetonas Lafawn was bred in Oklahoma by Weetona Stanley.
LJ Moonrise (Separatist-Risen Eagle) and jockey Francisco Calderon flashed speed early
and held third for owner P & J Racing LTD and trainer Leon Bard. The 3-year-old filly, bred in Texas by Elizabeth Vance, was also seeking a second straight stakes win after win- ning the Lone Star Distaff Challenge.
