STOMINADO
 by Danny Camp
Stominado scored his first stakes win
in the $326,530 New Mexico Classic Futurity-RG2 at Zia Park on Oct. 27.
The gelding came into the finals with the second fastest qualifying time from the Oct. 5 tri- als. Stominado stormed away from the gate in the finals under Jaime Leos in sixth. With a big effort, they were able to put a nose in front at the wire. Trained by Juan Gonzalez, Stominado completed the 400 yards in :19.630 to earn a 96 speed index.
Stominado also earned the first place money that was worth $156,734, which boosted his lifetime earnings to $160,901 for owner J. Patricia Gonzalez.
Dosi and Norma Alvarez bred Stominado out of winner Diamonds N Rainbows, who fin- ished third in the Shue Fly Stakes-RG1. She is a full sister to New Mexico Distaff Challenge-G3 winner Rainbows N Diamonds, who was also a runner-up in the Zia Derby-RG2 and Sunland New Mexico Bred Invitational Handicap.
Diamonds N Rainbows has produced four winners from six starters, including Champion Foxy Moonflash, who won three stakes races, including the New Mexico Fillies and Mares
Championship-RG1, and By By JJ Stakes winner Stone Cold Diamond. Stomindao is her third stakes winner.
His second dam is winner
Shines Likea Diamond, who
was a finalist in the West
Texas Derby-G3 and Sunland Park Winter Derby-G3.
“Stominado was a $47,000 purchase at the Ruidoso sale,” said Gonzalez. “We always liked this horse, but we knew his personality and he needed time to mature.
“He is just now coming into himself. We knew he was fast but he just didn’t catch on to the break from the gate thing. He was always slow away from there.
“He has now figured out the gate thing, and he knows he needs to get away quickly,” Gonzalez stated.
“He needs the distance, so the 400 yards was in his favor. This horse is super calm. He is chill in the paddock and on the track.”
Gonzales continued about his thoughts on the horse, “We think he has a big future in front of him and next we are going to try our
chances in the Shu Fly at Sunland Park.”
Singin In The Choir (First Moonflash-A Medley Of Chicks) came into the finals with the sixth fastest time. He scored second place
money under J. Ramirez. Owned by Riley Martin and trained by Toby Keeton, the geld- ing has won two races from seven starts.
Fastest qualifier Don Chuy C (First Moonflash-Jess Say Bye Bye) finished in third for owner Jesus Carrasco. The Jose Ramos trainee had Adrian Ramos aboard. The colt previously won the By By JJ Stakes in July.
Boy With Cash (One Handsome Man- Begonia Cash) finished fourth and was followed across the wire by Honky Tonk Daddy (Big Daddy Cartel-Jenna James), Mi Moonflash (First Moonflash-Mi Camila TB), First Neon Moon (First Moonflash-My Soul Mate), Close To Crazy (Jesse James Jr-Da Edge), Amandas Flashy (First Moonflash-Holland Fire) and Quintessential bridge-Quintessential Queen). Perrys Regard was scratched.
