John Ward Handicap
JESS A COWBOY
by Tracy Gantz
Jess A Cowboy improved upon his narrow loss in last year’s John Ward Handicap at Los Alamitos to win it this year. He was scoring the 10th stakes victory of his career and fourth at Los Alamitos in the $16,000 stakes.
Favored at 4-5 in the five-horse John Ward, Jess A Cowboy broke on top and never gave up the lead. He won by a 1/2-length in :19.845 for 400 yards, which was good for a 91 speed index.
Oscar Andrade Jr. rode the gelding for the third consecutive time, previously finishing second in the Wayne Brasher Memorial Stakes and winning the Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap.
Matthew Fales trains Jess A Cowboy for owner Larry Stark. Jess A Cowboy won six of his 10 stakes at Turf Paradise in Arizona. The 7-year-old gelding has a record of 13 wins, 11 seconds, and five thirds in 39 starts for earnings of $245,697.
Larry and Phyllis Stark bred Jess A Cowboy out of multiple stakes winner Secret Return. She has produced eight winners from nine starters, including 2017 Turf Paradise Juvenile Challenge and 2018 Arizona QRA Futurity winner Cowgirl N Up and stakes-placed Redneck Woman. Jess A Cowboy is her second stakes winner.
CM Boom Shakalaka (Carters Cartel-Mi Fames A Dandy), trained by Nick Lowe, who owns the 4-year-old gelding with Chris Sutton, ran second. Rodrigo Aceves rode CM Boom Shakalaka, a four- time stakes winner.
Fales also trains third-place Sweet Babie James (One Sweet Jess-Already In Love), owned and bred by his parents, Carolyn and Ralph Fales. Erasmo Gasca piloted Sweet Babie James, who won the 2017 Desert Classic Derby.
Time For Jesse Lee (Mr Jesse Lee-Time For Noble) finished fourth, followed by Mick Lovin (Im Alright Now-Micks Jewels).
