PCQHRA Breeders’ Derby-G3
MISTER APPOLITICAL
by Tracy Gantz
Pete and Evelyn Parrella own Legacy Ranch in Clements, California, breeding and raising rac- ing Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds. Pete chairs
the board of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association, but he’s also very involved with his Quarter Horse operation, which won the $140,000 PCQHRA Breeders’ Derby-G3 with homebred Mister Appolitical at Los Alamitos on Oct. 4.
Terry Knight trains Mister Appolitical, and he recommended a short break for him after a 4th place finish in the Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1. That worked well, as the gelding returned to qualify the fast- est for the PCQHRA Breeders’ Derby during the Sept. 14 trials, and then led throughout the finals. He and jockey Jesus Ayala held off odds-on favorite Chocolatito by a nose in :19.742 for a 93 speed index. The $58,800 winner’s share took his earnings to $216,426.
Mister Appolitical was also a finalist in the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1 and Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity-G1. The Grade 1 PCQHRA Breeders Derby is his first stakes victory.
Legacy Ranch bred Mister Appolitical in California from homebred winner LR Miss Atina.
She is out of the Legacy-raced Thoroughbred Bella Banissa, a graded stakes-placed earner of $199,684. LR Miss Atina has produced three starters/winners.
Dr. Ed Allred owns and Scott Willoughby trains second-place Chocolatito (Favorite Cartel-Enjoy The Walk) and third-place Transcend (Walk Thru Fire-In Another World). Vinnie Bednar piloted Chocolatito, while Oscar Andrade Jr. rode Transcend.
Completing the field were Conquering Marie (Coronado Cartel-Illegal Fireworks), Red Hawk Cartel (Favorite Cartel-Red Hawk Chick), Ali Babe Foose (Foose-Babe On The Fly), Wicked Affair (One Sweet Jess-Burr Cold) and Jess Flashee (First Moonflash-Jess And Molly). Cole Man 47 & Hot Little Kiddy scratched.
Autumn Handicap
JUST BE REAL
by Tracy Gantz
Just Be Real scored in stakes company in his very first attempt, annexing the $30,000 Autumn Handicap at Los Alamitos on Oct. 12.
Vinnie Bednar has ridden Just Be Real in all of his starts, and the jockey was back aboard for the 350-yard Autumn Handicap. They broke in second, dueled with Spirit Foose early, and then drew away to win by a length in :17.643, posting a 93 speed index. The $16,500 winner’s share of the purse boosted his total bankroll to $28,170.
The win was significant for Bednar and for trainer Scott Willoughby. It tied Bednar for the lead in the Los Alamitos jockey standings with Jesus Ayala and put Willoughby atop the leading trainer list at the track.
Willoughby trains Just Be Real for owner Dr. Ed Allred, who bred the gelding in California out
of Kansas Derby-RG3 winner Realistically. She has produced 100% money earners from 13 starters, including top earner Vivid, winner of the Miss Princess Handicap-G3, Ed Burke Memorial Juvenile and A Ransom Handicap. Just Be Real is her third stakes winner.
Paul Jones trains and co-owns second-place
Suite Expectations (Apollitical Jess-Just A Fairytale). Ramon Sanchez piloted the filly for Jones and co- owners Howard Nichols and Thompson Racing Inc. Suite Expectations previously won three of five races, all at Los Alamitos.
Third-placed Interesting Bar (Seperate Interest- Baccarat Bar) races for Ernesto Parra and Valentin Zamudio, who also trains the gelding. Ruben Lozano rode the gelding.
Rounding out the field were Spirit Foose (Foose- Beauty Secrets), Jess A Favorite Kiss (Jess Being Valiant-Favorite Kiss), Piety (Foose-Pious), El Angel Corona (Corona Czech-Special Ela) and JR Prissys Blood (Apollitical Blood-Prissy B Panther).
Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap
JESS A COWBOY
by Tracy Gantz
In his third attempt at the Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap, Jess A Cowboy won the race for the second time. He first annexed the event in 2017,
finished fourth in 2018 after a slow start, and then scored again at Los Alamitos on Oct. 4.
Young Oscar Andrade Jr. piloted Jess A Cowboy, breaking second but immediately going to the front. Jess A Cowboy proved much the best, winning
the 400-yard Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap by 1 1/2-lengths in :19.834, posting a 91 speed index.
Matthew Fales trains Jess A Cowboy for owner Larry Stark.
“This horse is class, just like his owner,” said Fales.
Jess A Cowboy has now won nine stakes and earned $236,897. All of those black-type races have come at either Turf Paradise in his native Arizona or at Los Alamitos in California.
Larry and Phyllis Stark bred Jess A Cowboy from their homebred multiple stakes winner Secret Return. The mare has produced eight winners from nine starters, including stakes winner Cowgirl N Up and stakes-placed Redneck Woman.
K & R Allred Ranch LLC’s Arizona Favorite (Favorite Cartel-Check Her For Cash), bred by Kevin and Robin Allred, ran second under jockey Erasmo Gasca for trainer Hector Magallanes. The 3-year-old gelding had placed in four previous stakes.
Jesus Valenzuela piloted Sassy On Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Jess Sass Me) to third for owner McColee Land & Livestock LLC and trainer Mike Robbins. Sassy On Fire was coming off a victory in the Elko Quarter Horse Derby.
Completing the field were Duck Dash N
Go (Coronas Fast Dash-Duck Mea Running), Apollitical Judge (Apollitical Jess-Misterious Lady), Mick Lovin (Im Alright Now-Micks Jewels) and Locomotion Girl (Desirio-Commotion Motion). CM Boom Shakalaka was scratched.
