Ramiro González Ozuna Classic: Selecta Auction Futurity-RG3
REX SAMBASO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The trials for this traditional futurity took place on Aug. 24-25. There were 20 heats from which the 10 finalists were obtained, with others having the right to dispute the consolation prize. These came from a total
of 155 two year olds, five more than in 2018, with all of them presented at the 2018 Select Yearling Auction. Their owners paid the respective participation fees, which included a total exchange of $8,470,500 pesos (approx. US $432,431), of which $6,375,625 pesos (approx. US $325,485) went to reward the owners of the finalists according to order of arrival at the finish line on Sept. 15.
Of note were the five entries from Rancho El Suspiro, as well as two from Cuadra Santa Cruz. It was a finale among individuals from five “Cuadras,” something unprecedented at the Hipodromo de las Américas.
The most requested at the betting-windows were those entered by Rancho El Suspiro, bear- ers of the numbers 1 to 1D, which for betting purposes were considered as a single entry,
closing with odds of 0.80. In this group were coupled Malefico Cartel and Rex Sambaso, the flagship runners of the
aforementioned ranch and
which qualified with the two fastest times.
The problems began
at the start when Princesa
Cartel (1A) ran outwards,
hitting his partner Corona
Sola (1B), whom together
with One Zulu Dragon
(2A) closed the way for GS
As De Bastos (#3), whose
rider directed him towards
the inner rail, disrupting
his path. When it seemed
that the group was heading smoothly towards the goal, Malefico Cartel (1D) swerved to his right, forcing the rider of RG Onchao A King (#4) to shorten his step to avoid an accident.
Rex Sambaso (1C) took advantage of the fray to escape at full speed towards the goal,
under the threat of Malefico Cartel which closed in second place, followed by Chispita
Two (#1), which minutes later was promoted to second place due to disqualification. The winner, Rex Sambasco, had Eddi Cuellar as rider, marking a time of :17.11 (SI 93).
The stewardess reviewed the race for several minutes, in which they decided to disqualify three of the five runners of Rancho El Suspiro: Princesa Cartel, Corona Sola and Malefico Cartel, placing them in ninth, tenth and fourth positions, respectively,
leaving the already formerly mentioned arrivals in first and second place. It was a ruling that did not leave everyone satisfied, because it could well have disqualified the five members of the “entry” according to Article 175, second paragraph, of the “Technical Rules Issued
