                Mexican Breeders’ Derby
EL PAVO REAL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
Of the 20 three-year-old Mexico bred horses that entered, only 11 were registered to run on Oct. 13 at a distance of 440 yards, this
being the only stakes race for Mexican-breds at this distance. An attractive prize of $749,450 pesos (approx. US $38,398) was to be distrib- uted among the participants according to their order of arrival at the finish line.
The forecasts favored the entry of Rancho El Suspiro, formed by El Pavo Real and Juanita Cartel, due to El Pavo Real’s previous win in the Select Auction Derby.
At the start, the gelding AG The Perry
(#6) was closed-off by the colt Y She Left (#7) and Juanita Cartel (#1), leaving him with no opportunity despite the efforts of rider Rogelio Sáenz. Sky Fast Beduino (#4) went inward and bothered Dancer Chimpa (#3), but soon got “on track” toward the distant finish line.
Among the other participants, the domi- nance of El Pavo Real (#1A), who was devouring the sandy track at great strides, was soon notice- able under the command of Leonardo Vidaña. Meanwhile on his left, they were doing the same with BR Corona de Chivali (#5) and Juanita Cartel. However, upon reaching the 1/4-mile post, it was clear El Pavo Real would dominate,
surpassing BR Corona De Chivali by 1 1/4-length and the latter 1/2-length in front of Juanita Cartel.
El Pavo Real traveled the 440 yards in :21.19, for a career best 103 speed index. The gelding is by Danny Cartel and out
of Serenity Starlet, by Strawfly Special. He was bred in Cuadra La Presita.
The judges disqualified
the colt Y She Left from fifth to last place for the offense committed at the start of the race.
This is the fourth consecutive win for El Pavo Real in the current season and sixth in his career, reporting earnings of $314,769 pesos (approx. $16,126 US), approaching 1.4 million pesos. An important contribution to this figure was made in the Select Auction Derby, which he won on Sept. 1.
Juan Baldovinos Jr. represented Rancho El Suspiro and was accompanied by Ernesto Verges, José Guadalupe García and trainer Ismael Ayala Salas, who was accompanied by his wife and son, among others.
Owned by Cuadra Bronco Rider, the colt BR Corona De Chivali arrived in second. By Southern Corona and out of Chivali Go (by Gone To The Man) and led by Eddi Cuéllar Soriano, he was raised by Maximiliano Pérez Castañeda and saddled by trainer Luis Eduardo Flores Gómez.
In third place was Juanita Cartel, the paternal sister of the winner, also
owned by Rancho El Suspiro and raised by Cuadra La Presita, under the direction of José Ángel Ambrosio Medina, and also saddled by Ismael Ayala Salas.
Also in the running were: Sky Fast Beduino (Whathaveigottado–Fast Chicks), Centurion
D Master (Dash Master Jess–Ivory Riches),
SE Millenium Alert (Millenium Cartel–Travel Alert), Mezcalero GC (Native Jewel DH–BT Roses For Nemo), Dancer Chimpa (Ze Dancer– Macumba Royal Hemp), Feature Horse (Sea Horse Corona–Feature Bye Jess), AG The Perry (Sea Horse Corona–Unknown Source) and Y She Left (Azyoucansee–She Left You).
