                J. Merced Gómez Orozco Clasico
MARNEY JO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
Always an attractive race due to the caliber of participants, the fans consider the J. Merced Gómez Orozco Clasico the pre-Champion-of- Champions. On this occasion, eight three- year-old or older runners were enrolled in the race to be contested at 400 yards for a prize of $368,000 pesos (approximately $19,052).
The wide favorite in the bets was the grey gelding Lafishingonabugsmoon, who has already made himself known to the readers of Speedhorse where the three local track records that he has set in the current season at the Hipodromo de las Américas stand out – at 300, 350 and 440 yards. So, it was anticipated that he would better the :19.14 record for 400 yards, which has been in effect since Sept. 14, 2014, or at least that he would win this stakes event since his final odds were 0.20.
However for this event, he would have to defeat several rivals of proven ability, who were also going for the main part of the mentioned prize money.
The race developed cleanly, with Litely Political (#2) leading the group very close to the inner rail, enduring the close pressure of Marney Jo (#4) and Chics Love Curls (#1A), who was linked-up with his teammate Gulf Coast Streaker (#1). It was a speed-duel among the leading three, which also tested the skill
and temperance of the respec- tive jockeys.
When they reached the
finish line, they had to wait
for the photo-finish to decide
the winner between Chics
Love Curls and Marney Jo.
The evidence showed the grey
filly by a millimeter’s differ-
ence at the front, with Litely Political following in third place.
The :19.08 (SI 107) clocking of Marney Jo constituted a new local speed record for 400 yards, to the approval of Rancho El Suspiro, his team, followers and connections who, jubilantly, went to the winner’s circle for the awards. Among them was Juan Baldovinos, son and family, trainer José Guadalupe García and his father, Ismael Ayala Salas, responsible for saddling her and, of course, the rider José Ángel Ambrosio Medina.
Marney Jo now withdraws from the racing circuit in order to prepare for her next stage as a broodmare, which will take place in the United States. She is backed by a 6-2-0 record in 10 starts, including victories in the Félix Bañuelos Jiménez Classic, AQHA Mexico Distaff Challenge, Velocidad Classic, and now in the
J. Merced Gómez Orozco Classic, as well as a
second place in the Chirina Glorys Classic and Javier Rosique Palavicini Classic. This corresponds to an earn- ings figure of 1,257,457 pesos.
