FLASH AND ROLL
  by Tracy Gantz
Justin Joiner became the third member of
his family to train a stakes winner at Los Alamitos when Flash And Roll captured the $942,750 Golden State Million Futurity-G1 on Nov. 4. Joiner followed his father, Mike, and his brother, Cody.
“We have a family business,” said Justin. “Everybody does their part anywhere they go, and everybody deserves that amount of credit. My dad is in Hobbs and Zia Park. I do a lot of the traveling.”
Justin traveled to California to saddle Scott Bryant’s Flash And Roll in the Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity.
He wasn’t the only one to follow the filly. Champion jockey G. R. Carter Jr. has ridden Flash And Roll in all five of her starts, the first three at Ruidoso Downs and the last two at Los Alamitos Race Course.
In the Oct. 21 trials to the Golden State Million Futurity-G1, Flash And Roll won her heat wire-to-wire as she drew off throughout the contest to win by 2-lengths.
The third-fastest qualifier, Flash And Roll was the third choice for the Golden State finals. She broke on top from the four-gate and never let anyone get ahead of her through the 400 yards. Another wire-to-wire performance,
Flash And Roll won by 1/2-length in :19.665, posting a career high 95 speed index.
“When she runs a good
race, that’s how she breaks,”
stated Justin. “She’s still
pretty quick footed for the
first 50 yards out of the gate.
If she can get out in front of
those horses like that, she’s tough to outrun.”
Joiner was a little concerned halfway through the race because it seemed as if Flash And Roll was looking at something and might have gotten distracted.
“Luckily, having a good rider like G.R., who didn’t panic, got her back on stride,” the trainer said.
“She finished the race really nice,” Joiner continued. “I was a little concerned there for a second, but when you have a good driver, the vehicle usually goes forward.”
Jockey Carter has won the Golden State Million Futurity three times now. His first was in 2002 with First Place Queen. Then, he won the race again the next year with Be A Bono, who was the 2004 World Champion, Champion Three Year Old and Champion Three-Year Old Gelding..
Mike Joiner, who won
the 2006 Ed Burke Million Futurity at Los Alamitos with FDD Dynasty, trained Flash And Roll when she raced at Ruidoso Downs. It was her first out when she captured her trial for the Ruidoso Futurity-G1 with a wire-to-
wire performance, qualifying for the finals. She had an awkward break in the $975,000 final, however, and finished in seventh place.
Flash And Roll then won her trial for the All American Futurity-G1 - again leading from gate to wire - but did not qualify to the final.
“She hauled out here a little rough, so we gave her a little time off before we came back training on her,” said Justin.
“We got her ready for the (Golden State Million Futurity) trials and she ran an awesome race,” the trainer continued. “She wasn’t tired after the trials. I gave her four or five days off. I brought her to the track to evaluate her, and she went like a million dollars. She came back great for the finals.”
Flash And Roll deposited the $395,955 winner’s share from her Golden State Million Futurity-G1 victory, taking her total earnings to $440,255.
