THIS IS A DEAL TOO
by Michael Compton
Pete Scarmardo’s Texas homebred This Is A Deal Too wasn’t in the mood for negotiating with his rivals when he fired a big effort to win the $50,000
Lovington Stakes-G2 at Zia Park on Dec. 2. Ridden by Francisco Calderon, This Is A Deal
Too broke alertly and raced in second position early in the 400-yard test. In a stiff drive, he wrestled the lead away from Myst Fit in the lane and powered home to defeat the race favorite by a neck at the fin- ish, stopping the clock in :19.671 and earning a 94 speed index.
It was the initial stakes score for the Jackie Riddle trainee and the 3 year old’s fourth win overall. The $30,000 winner’s share of the purse increased his bankroll to $200,698. In addition to his stakes victory, he also finished third in the 2017 Ruidoso Futurity-G1 and fourth in the Texas Classic Derby-G1 on Nov. 10.
