mother’s Day stakes
Zoomin To win
by Stacy Pigott
Zoomin To Win paid homage to her dam, First Place Winner, in the $29,350 Mother’s Day Stakes on May 12 at Delta Downs, becoming the mare’s first stakes winner.
Bred by You And Me Partners, Zoomin To Win is the fifth starter and second winner for First Place Winner, an unraced daughter of First Place Dash. Zoomin To Win became her dam’s richest performer with the Mother’s Day win, which was the filly’s
fourth career win and first stakes win.
Ridden by John Hamilton, Zoomin To Win broke straight from post position 10 and took slight bumping from Pantherinthefastlane, who broke out from the nine hole. Shaking off the mild contact, Zoomin To Win quickly passed the rivals to her immediate inside. Clear
of her closest foes, Zoomin To Win lugged
in to the middle of the track while still maintaining her lead. Pulling away through the final strides, Zoomin To Win crossed the line three-quarters of a length in front of Bang Bang Bang, with Little Eye Opener a half- length back in third.
Trained by Heath Taylor, Zoomin To Win covered the 350 yards in :17.233, setting a new stakes record for the Mother’s
Day. The Azoom filly earned $15,000 for owners Kimberly and Herman Hogue. Zoomin To Win has finished first or second in eight of 10 starts. This was her first start of 2012, and marked a success- ful debut in stakes company. Runner-up Bang Bang
Bang (Lock To Load-Sweet Fly And Fly) earned $8,000 for owner Carl Smith. Lucas Constantin rode the
4-year-old mare, who was making her first start of the year. Kenny Roberts trains Bang Bang Bang, who won an optional claiming race in her final start of 2011.
J and B Rental’s Little Eye Opener (Mr Eye Opener-Little Kool Barbie) carried a three-race winning streak into the Mother’s Day, including a division of the Texas Twister Stakes in her last start on April 20. Jeff Acuna saddled the 3-year- old filly, who was ridden by Eleazar Guillen.
The top three were followed across the finish line by Flamboyant Chick (Toast To Dash-Hempen Chick), Allusional Dash (Heza Fast Dash-Special Allusion TB), Pantherinthefastlane (Panther Mountain- Sheza Neon Rose), Flying To The Line (Dashin Zee Vee-How To Fly), and Lindsays First Jewel (Voghts Gold-Ms Maggies First). Allure Sr and Six Patriots were scratched.
