separate Thoughts isn’t the best gate horse, which is why trainer Pat Visscher feels the filly will do better at 400 yards. That’s what made her victory in the May 12 La Pacifica Handicap over 350 yards at Los Alamitos even more impressive.
When the gate opened, Separate Thoughts broke slowly. Jockey Antonio Alberto urged her forward, and she moved up to pass several horses. She ran with Study Hall Pierce, edging that one by a head, with Chickitita on the rail in the photo as well.
The Washington-bred Separate Thoughts broke her maiden in her third and final start at 2 last July 10. Owner-breeders Edward and Theresa DeNike turned her out, and she didn’t face the starter
again until February. She won that allowance and then flipped in the gate in her next start. Visscher schooled the filly several times, but she still didn’t break well when third in an April 22 allowance race.
“She broke much better tonight,” Visscher said after the La Pacifica.
The Thoroughbred mare A Lil’ Alimony pro- duced Separate Thoughts to the cover of Separatist. A winner in seven of 25 starts, A Lil’ Alimony earned $162,504. Separate Thoughts is her first foal.
Second-place Chickitita (Tac It Like A Man-The Devine Miss Em) races for Jeryl Hartley and John Firth. Cruz Mendez rode her for trainer John Cooper.
Dr. Ed Allred’s homebred Study Hall Pierce (TR Dasher-Strict) finished third with Eduardo Nicasio aboard. Cody Joiner trains the filly.
Rounding out the field were Tac It To Heart (Tac It Like A Man-Let’s Eat Lunch-TB), Easeful Dinastia (Corona Cartel-Dinastia Toll Brz), A First Down Snow (First Down Dash-Springtime Snow), Mai Corona (Corona Cartel-Babe On The Beach), OC City Girl (First Down Dash-Shirleys Strawfly), Sixy Silhouette (Corona Cartel-Oh So Sixy), and Tac Out (Check Him Out-Separate Tac).

Zoomin moon

Breaking with favored Winners Winner in the 300-yard stakes, Zoomin Moon veered toward the outside and then straightened out under jockey Rodrigo Vallejo’s right-hand urging. She zoomed up to take over the lead and won by 1 1/4 lengths in :15.546.
Trainer Gary Jacobs unveiled Zoomin Moon in a 300-yard maiden race at Sam Houston on April 21. The filly ran third that day to Winners Winner. Jacobs is the longtime trainer for Zoomin Moon’s owner-breeder, Wendell Blankenship.
Blankenship bought Moonpie Marauder, the dam of Zoomin Moon, as a yearling. Moonpie Marauder won two stakes races in 2003 and was named the Paint champion 2-year-old filly that sea- son. An earner of $33,939, Moonpie Marauder has produced four winners from five starters, including graded stakes-placed Moons Image. Jacobs turned Doctor Lee, the mare’s only starter who didn’t win, into his team roping horse.
Dr. Victor Villarreal’s homebred Winners Winner (Awesome Chrome-Intrinsic Winner) finished second for jockey Cipriano Vidana. Jose Espinosa trains the colt. Dashin For Jewels (Dash Last Episode-Judys Jewel) ran third with Jorge Roman in the irons. Sandra Garnett bred, owns, and trains the colt.
Completing the field were Mona Dash (Monarch Pass-Eastersundaymist), Spooky Movies (Awesome Chrome-Moonlight N Memories), Jess Shaken
Angel (Jess Shake Em Up-Angel In Action), Carlitos Chrome (Awesome Chrome-Rippin Ruffian), Awesomemesomemoney (Awesome Chrome-Snow Rose Dash), Judys Last Episode (Dash Last Episode- This Judys A Corona), and Lajollas Dolce Date (Dolce La Jolla-Bedadate).
